TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers from the US typically need to show proof of an onward flight when entering Thailand, particularly if they are traveling on a short-term visa or visa exempt status. Some travelers have reported that they weren't asked for proof of an onward flight, but experiences vary by airline and circumstance. For those on a TR visa, while it is suggested to have a tentative departure date, proof isn't always demanded. To fulfill the requirement, booking a refundable flight might be a common workaround.

Don't come to a Facebook group for questions like that
Today Singapore airline asked me a return ticket. I think it all comes to how you explain and the person on the other side. I was lucky that they didnot insist.. I easily passed without a return ticket and no visa.

Just book an onward cheap flight to Singapore, no intention of going but it satisfies the visa requirements
For a TR visa, I emailed the embassy in Australia this week to ask about outbound flight requirements and all they said was to add a tentative date for the departure. No need to supply proof.
Ive never been asked by an airline or immi officer to show proof of an outbound/return flight when entering BKK on a TR visa but you certainly will need one if traveling on visa exempt entry.
. It's hit and miss with airlines. I live in Thailand on a spouse visa/ extension for 4 years. Travelled to Australia, my home country for a short time, when leaving to go back to Thailand I got into an argument with check in attendant because I didn't have a return flight to Aust... after 10 minutes of telling her I'm returning to Thailand, my home, on a return flight. She called the immigration police, who arrived and told her she was wrong.. smh. She ended up being one of the air hostesses on my flight..
If on a short term visa, or visa exempt then yes. You will need a flight out of Thailand within the allowed days of your visa. Some people seem to have managed to get away without having one, but many are denied boarding by their airline if they don’t have one. You might get away with it. You may not.
