URGENT - Layover in Bangkok

I have a 2 hour layover in Bangkok from Colombo to Phnom Penh and I heard that you still need a thai pass because I have to collect my luggage to give it to the other company.

Are you aware of this? Is it possible to have a Thai pass by the 12th? And you know a cheap thai pass hotel in Bangkok?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The traveler expresses concern over needing a Thai pass for a 2-hour layover in Bangkok, as they must collect their luggage for a connecting flight. Comments highlight that if luggage is checked through to the final destination, no immigration clearance is necessary. However, if the traveler must collect their luggage due to airline policies, they would need to clear immigration and secure a Thai pass, which may not be feasible with limited layover time. Recommendations include traveling with carry-on baggage to avoid immigration, contacting the airline for options, and avoiding the hassle of changing flights.

All this confusion and hassle is why I haven’t even left Thailand in 2 &

yrs. I’m afraid of what I may encounter leaving and returning 🤦‍♂️.

If you clear Immigration you will need a ThailandPass.

There is no way you can collect your bags yourself unless you meet all the requirements to enter Thailand. Then you must go directly from arrivals to the Hospital (or your test and go hotel if they have onsite testing) , you will not be allowed to go to the 4th floor to check in for another flight.

all this anxiety and hassle. Best bet is to stay at home and wait until the nonsense stops.

Some of us have no “home”. Just plan ahead to meet the requirements of country of entry, country of transit, and airline. It’s permanent.

And what if I take my luggage as carry on?

Well, first I'm not very used to travel by planes so obviously I don't take that into account when taking a flight + I've never been to that airport so again I don't know how complicated this is... Plus if I sell a service, usually it's because it works or this is possible etc... They are the experts, not me...

Personally, I’d definitely travel with only hand luggage and try for my boarding pass airside. Given that you only have two hours I’d definitely avoid having to go through immigration.

The airlines will take no responsibility if your connecting flight is missed - as you have chosen this route.

Arg but really, why is this airport so annoying, so many other airport have no issues like that for connections...
Ang *****
@Florian ***********
it’s not the airport but the airlines and your choices that are the problem. Given that you need to wait for your bags and clear immigration I think you will be very lucky to make the next checkin on time.

“The new normal” Does nothing to protect from a virus and probably permanent. At Narita airport now you are not allowed to change terminals (there are 3) even if you have a confirmed ticket. We had an issue with one of our Business class customers last year.

So à good solution or not a solution the carry on idea? Because my bag can go as a carry on if I push a bit
Ադամ ********
@Florian ***********
Not a solution but I think it could help. The problem is checking in for your next flight not just the baggage.

That is even better. These third party websites are selling “illegal” connections in many markets. Even JAL and ANA genuine sites have been selling Haneda+Narita connections and international connections to domestic flight. Basically not allowed due to covid restrictions

@Adam *******
so how am I able to book this kind of connection flights?

And why does some website like aircanada states the following?

Obviously I can't change the date neither the flights, I love airline companies 😍

, sealed route implies that you will not be entering Bangkok, and your luggage goes all the way to your final destination on its own. This means (most likely) not even going through immigration there. And I believe it also implies that you have your next boarding pass already. I don't specifically know the Thailand rules, but I know that in both Vancouver and Narita in November, we were escorted pretty much everywhere until we got to the departing gate area. Our luggage went to the final destination.

If you can change your flight route, I would look into that. But definitely try to keep to the same airline if you have checked luggage. That will help a lot.

Do you know about stopover in Singapore? I think I'll just take another flight
Ադամ ********
@Florian ***********
Singapore transfer is possible. It requires a single itinerary on approved airlines like SQ and Scoot. Otherwise, to go to the ticket counter, you must have all the requirements to enter Singapore. Same as Thailand but Singapore does not require covid testing or $50,000 USD insurance to transit. The Singapore authorities wisely abolished the onerous (and burdensome) transit PCR test requirements last month.

Do you have by any chance friends in Lanmei?

I just heard of Lanmei airline today!

So what do you think I should do now? Call Lanmei and arrange it with them? Or wait and see the 12th?
Ադամ ********
@Florian ***********
Call ahead to see if they can Waiting to 12th you may not even be boarding. Buy a new flight, make a new plan, or take your chances. If you actually made it to BKK I think your chance is good. Much easier to call somebody to print your boarding pass than sending you back!
Ադամ ********
@Florian ***********
What it does not say. You need a connecting ticket on a single itinerary. Getting Thailand pass for a two hour connection is not an option. ⬆️ . If the airline in Columbo even lets you board there is a chance you can get the staff of Lanmei airlines to collect your bags and passport from airside then issue you the boarding pass. Otherwise you would have to be sent back to Sri Lanka. About six months ago a woman from Burma was able to do this to get to UK.

No it's 2 airlines so it's a self luggage connection and therefore apparently I need to go through the immigration
Kevin ***********
@Florian ***********
Then you need a ThailandPass and Test and Go.

Garrett ***********
There's a transit option, you don't need to book a hotel.
Stephen *******
@Garrett **********
not if he booked separate tickets. Airlines will sell you anything!
Ադամ ********
@Garrett **********
A transit option on Thailand pass?
Janne ***********
You should have your luggage checked thru to Cambodia so you don't need to go and collect luggage, no immigration just stay in transfer zone!
Oonagh **********
@Janne **********
I understand that if both flights on the same booking reference, luggage can be booked straight through to final destination. If two booking references, luggage needs to be reclaimed and enter the country only to checkin for next flight .
Janne ***********
Well aware of the rules, and possible restrictions.
Ադամ ********
@Janne **********
Some airlines do not have interline transfer agreements. If they even let him board it is possible, to have the connecting airline staff collect his bags and passport and issue a boarding pass from airside.
