Can someone who overstayed their Visa Exempt by 10 days extend their stay or should they leave Thailand?

A person who has overstayed their Visa Exempt by 10 days can either pay the fine and apply for a 30-day extension, but the extension will be retroactively dated from the expiration of the original visa, resulting in a net loss of 10 days. Alternatively, if they haven't exhausted the limit of two 30-day entries by land in the year, they can leave Thailand, settle the overstay fee at the border, and then re-enter with a fresh 30-day Visa Exempt entry.
