Asking for my partner who is an Australian currently living in Germany (he still has an official residence in aus). He would like to apply for a working holiday visa for Thailand. After contacting the Thai Consulate in Sydney they said we have to contact the German Embassy (tho he isn’t a German citizen).

Do you know more about this issue? Can he apply for a working holiday visa and if yes, which embassy does he need to contact?

Thankful for any help! Hannah

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question revolves around whether an Australian citizen living in Germany can apply for a working holiday visa for Thailand. Confusion arose when the Thai Consulate in Sydney referred him to the German Embassy, although he is not a German citizen. Several comments highlighted that he should instead contact the Thai Embassy in Canberra for accurate information regarding the working holiday visa. However, there were also clarifications that Thailand does not officially recognize a working holiday visa category. To work legally in Thailand, one must apply for a work permit along with their visa application.

If he is living in Germany didn't they mean he should contact Thai embassy in Germany? It makes absolutely no sense for an Australian citizen to contact the German mission to Australia for a visa to Thailand.

As an Australian passport holder, he can only get this special type of visa in Australia and not in Germany.

Go to the website of the Thai Embassy in Canbarra, go to the visa section under Consular service, select Australia as passport holder and Go. Then go to the last option Working Holiday Visa and all you need to know is there. Sorry, as there are a few options i can not give the direct link and the text is very long to just copy and past

I would have him contact the consular affairs at the embassy in Canberra. If such a program does exist for Thailand, chances are that he'll have to apply from his home country.

To legally work in Thailand, a foreigner must apply for a work permit. Work permit is a legal document that states a foreigner's position, current occupation, or job description and the Thai company he is working with. It also serves as a license to perform a job or an occupation allowed for foreigners inside Thailand.

Countries that provide work holiday visas (like Australia, Canada, Japan, etc) obviously provide work permits.
