TLDR : Answer Summary
It is not possible to switch from an education visa to a tourist visa or obtain an amnesty while in Thailand. However, you can apply for a 60-day Covid extension if you have documentation from your school that states your study end date. You'll need several documents, including copies of your passport and arrival card, a passport photo, and specific application forms, along with a fee of 1,900 baht. It's advised to check with local immigration offices for any variations in requirements and to apply at least ten days prior to your visa's expiration.

As for documentation You’ll need this stuff. Not all offices have the same requirements so it may be slightly different depending on which of the 70+ offices you use.

A copy of your passport data page,

A passport photo,

Proof of filing a TM30,

A copy of your departure card (TM6)

A copy of your latest entry stamp,

A filled out TM7 (application form for extensions),

A filled out STM2 (acknowledgement that you understand the rules for overstaying)

A filled out “I don’t want to leave because of Covid form” - I have no idea if it has an official name or number.

And 1,900 baht.

The forms are available at your local office. Most have places on site or nearby that can do the copies and photos.

George Grant yes. From what I hear the first round of extensions in Phuket they stamped from application date but by the second round they were adding them. So it’s not a one answer fits all. Best to ask your office.

...or, I'd need to just talk to the local offices I guess.

Ok, thanks. Must be still safer to apply around ten days prior to expiry you reckon?

could you comment?

I’ve heard different stories from different offices. Some applied the 60 days from when the person applied ( losing any days on their current stamp) and others added on 60 days from the current stamp regardless of application date. Sorry. Not a definitive answer.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I'm currently in Thailand. I had a non-b visa and work permit which expired in the end of January, so I went and got 2months covid extension visa. But I can't remember if the additional month is added to this 60 days for another 1900 or I need to apply for 2month extension again?

I heard ppl can do the 90 days total? Like getting first 2 month covid extension visa and then one month additionally? No?

@George ******
if they’ve entered using a tourist visa or by exemption the office will normally insist you apply for the “regular” 30 day extension before you can apply for the Covid one.

BUT what you can do is:

you get documentation from your school saying you stop studying on xxx date, you take that to the immigration office you cancel your extension and immediately apply for a 60 day covid extension

There is no amnesty anymore. You can’t get a tourist visa in country. Up until March 30th you can apply for the “unable to travel due to Covid” extension which would give you 60 days. After that date we don’t know what options may be available.

There is no amnesty and you can't get a tourist visa inside the country
