Is there anyway to get from a non O-A multi entry retirement visa (not extention) to a one year extension based on married to a thai from inside Thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can switch from a NON-O-A multi-entry retirement visa to a one-year extension based on marriage to a Thai citizen while in Thailand. Before your entry stamp expires, ensure you meet the financial requirements and have the correct documentation. Visit your local immigration office with your Thai spouse to receive guidance and a list of documentation needed for the application.

yep, when the year entry stamp you're here on runs down, you meet the financial requirements turn in the correct documentation and apply for a year extension based on marriage to a thai.

GO to your immigration office (with your thai wife) and your passport, talk to them about it and get the hand out listing the requirements and documentation you need.

Many people get off O-A entry stamps/extensions and switch to extensions based on marriage

I went to phuket Town immigration for the list of required documents, showed my visa and ask about extention based on married to a thai , after consulting a college he said I can extend the OA when I asked again he said no can extend OA. I guess that means phuket is one of those offices that won't allow a change first time. Thanks for the information everyone.

There are some offices Chaengwattana for one ( & it sounds like phuket is one too) that will not let people apply for a year extension based on marriage to a thai the FIRST extension (off the year O-A entry stamp).

They reason you got the visa based on being over 50 and you need to get at least ONE yearly extension for that reason FIRST before you can "change the reason" for your extension to one based on marriage to a thai.

What immigration office did you use

my immigration office is Phetchaburi. I also had completed 2 extensions based on retirement.

yep, once you get ONE yearly extension for the reason you held the O-A visa <-over 50/retirement ;) they will let you change it to another reason without any issues the next year. ..

in that case my advice would be to appeal that decision as it is most definitely wrong. In my own case that I detailed above I was happy to go around the houses slightly to get to get to the result I wanted.

had given me exactly the same advice as he gave here.

Are you still required to have the health insurance if you switch to the marriage extension?

Keep in mind SOME immigration offices make you get at least the first yearly extension based on the reason you have the visa, (retirement) and only allow you to change the reason to marriage for the second yearly extension but some allow you to do a marriage extension the first time right off the year entry stamp you got from the O-A.

Check with your immigration office to see what their policy is

I can fully endorse

approach. In my particular case at Phetchaburi immigration I went from extending on being over 50 to a 60 day visiting my Thai wife. I then extended for the full year due to being married to a Thai national.

The important thing for me was just follow what my immigration office said and everything worked out fine.
