ORIGINAL POSTER
I'm wanting to stay 90 days. My understanding is I won't need a visa. After 60 days I can extend for 39 days. Is my understanding correct ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks clarification on staying in Thailand for 90 days without a visa, assuming a 60-day visa exemption is extendable by 39 days. The comments reveal that the user can extend their 60-day visa exemption by 30 days (not 39) for a fee of 1900 Baht, but any extension must be applied for before the initial 60 days expire to avoid overstaying penalties. It is also noted that the first day of entry counts as day one, leading to a practical limit of about 89 nights in Thailand.

All depends where you stay in Thailand, some offices 45 prior, some 30 and some 7 days prior. If you do after you have to pay overstay.

Whether you need a Visa or not depends upon whether your passport allows you to have a 60 day Visa Exempt entry but you keep that a secret

Simon Gloede . . . You can’t extend your stay permit with 30 more days AFTER the initial 60 days

Because AFTER the 60 days, you are already in “overstay”

You must visit Immigration and buy the 30-days extension of the stay permit for 1900 Baht BEFORE the 60-days stay permit expires, and not AFTER it expired

that's a very good answer that addresses his misunderstanding regarding WHEN to apply for the extension 👍

my experience is that if you overstay you initial visa exempt period but then present at an immigration office for extension you are correct you are fined and stamped ‘overstay ‘ in passport and allowed to extend 30 days less the number of days you overstayed.

that depends if the Immigration officers you are dealing with like you nose, your shoes, your walk and your attitude. If you are lucky you will meet officers willing to be lenient to you 😉

I think your day of arrival is counted as your first day, so it's more like 89 days to be on the safe side. It also depends which country you are from, but I am presuming you're from a country that gets 60 days visa exempt.

39 was almost certainly a typo as the 9 is close to the 0. Happens to me all the time.

the 7 days stamp is not a "real" extension. It is an "application to extension denied" stamp that tells that you have 7 days to leave the kingdom. And these 7 days start on the same day the application gets denied, so I would be very careful to recommend this to anyone here in the group
