TLDR : Answer Summary
You can apply for an O Visa (retirement) for an initial period of 90 days. After that, you can extend it for additional 12-month periods as long as you meet the requirements. Therefore, instead of reapplying for a new visa every year, it is recommended to extend your existing visa.

You can only initially apply for a 3 month ' retirement' visa- they are then extended by 12 months at a time, assuming all requirements are in place. They are not new visas, just perpetual extentions on the original 3 months.

Much easier if you keep it going like this, precedent seems to be important.

can you extend for 12 months multiple times every 12 months? For say 3 years, 36 months? Or is it limited to just 1 extension?

its a retirement visa- designed to be extended annually as most recipients live here permanently. As a consequence you'll need a bank account and the 800k funds properly seasoned every time

... 1 year extensions on non O visas can be applied for and received indefinitely, as long as you fulfill all the requirements for the extension you are applying for.

interested to know why this route (I'm on non imm O 12 month extensions) vs say a tourist visa or visa exempt, plus 1 month extensions?

Two Non-O's for my two stays because there's no proof of onward travel needed, no challenge at Immigration for abusing tourism entries and no visit to Immigration to stay up to 90 days plus, if needed, I can visit my bank with the "correct" visa if requested
