I leave Thailand for the UK on March 31 I'm going to Vietnam on the 7th Jan back 13th Jan, if I go to Penang  at the beginning of Feb,can I get a visa for the rest of my time in Thailand?  just about 60 days, I'm currently on a 30 day tourist visa and will hopefully have another when I rtn from Vietnam so I need to cover from then till end of my stay.

I think you mean that at the moment your are inside Thailand with a 30 day Visa Exempt Entry stamp, it's not a visa. You can apply in Penang for a Single Entry Tourist Visa that will give you 60 days admitted to stay in Thailand with a possible 30 days Extension of Stay. You can even do this in Vietnam, it will give enough days till 31 March.

Or you could come in on a 30 day visa exempt entry from Vietnam, then when that's running out, go to the border, stamp out of thailand stamp in&out of another country and back into thailand to get another 30 day visa exempt entry, which you could extend for 30 more days if you needed to at the immigration office for 1900baht.

you don't have a 30 day tourist visa because there's no such thing :O You have a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp ;)

You can come in on a 30 day visa exempt entry from Vietnam, then go to Penang to get a single entry tourist visa which will take you past what you need as far as time in country.
