Can I hold two Thai visas simultaneously while waiting for approval of a new one?

Sep 23, 2024

I have an interesting scenario going on

Applied today in HCM , all good paperwork based on Muay Thai for 6 months course no issue with bank etc

However I have a valid Non O based on marriage that’s still in play and I have multi entry re entry permit in play still

Therefore I would have 2 visas in play IF approved

They took my 340 usd and asked me come back Wednesday to pick up passport

I presume I can be rejected on Wednesday or the fact they have taken my passport and paperwork is an approval in itself as others seem to have suggested …..

I shall update this post after 2 pm Wednesday !!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shared their experience of applying for a DTV visa while holding a valid Non-O visa. They were concerned about having two visas simultaneously, as some believe it's not allowed. After submitting their application and paying the required fees, they were informed to return for their passport, leading to speculation about the likelihood of approval. Community comments provided reassurance that having payment taken often indicates approval and discussed the process of canceling the Non-O visa upon return to Thailand. Ultimately, the user received confirmation of their DTV visa upon re-entering Thailand, clarifying that their Non-O visa was effectively canceled.

Update on this

Nice lady IO stamped me back in on DTV for 6 months

I did ensure I stated Non O now ‘finished /not valid / not using anymore ‘ …. Is it effectively cancelled ? and she said yes

So there’s the process from start to finish, I had zero hassle at suvarnbhuni and she knew what she was doing with DTV

Cheers all 👍

Mika Martin they didn’t actually do anything with it

They not cancelled it with pen or anything . I would bet that their system knows exactly that it’s been overwritten now

Without stopping for 10 minutes and asking why they didn’t actually have a stamp

Saying cancelled I don’t know the answer to all of this

I am back in Thailand and 100% on DTV now per stamp in passport tho

Edit >>> I made a point of flagging I had non o

times to the lady

She was cool

I just did it in HCMC and I think if they give you the slip and take your money there is a good chance you are fine. I cancelled my Ed visa before doing it but when I entered BKK the IO asked me do I want to come in under the Ed visa or the DTV. I thought this was odd because I was told you CANNOT have 2 active visas...when I told him the Ed visa was cancelled he looked again and saw the cancelled stamp on it. If I were you just cancel the other one when you get back.

Although this DTV is new, if you have a current extension of stay (rather than an actual visa) it would make sense, if your DTV is approved, to go to immigration upon your return to Thailand and cancel it.

Although having said that, it would be interesting to see what they stamp you in on at the Thai border seeing as you have an active re-entry permit.

If you’re planning on being in Thailand on the DTV for the foreseeable future then best to cancel any extensions immigration have given you.

Yes unless the expiration date of the existing visa or extension is coming up shortly. Then you can ignore it, provided of course, you enter Thailand on the DTV and not the old visa or extension.

I don’t believe you can have multiple valid visas at the same time, if issued it will be likely caught by immigration on arrival etc with their system or passport stamp review - one of the visas needs to be cancelled prior to, you should also have disclosed having a active visa already

Anonymous participant you made it sound like you were trying to have two visas at the same time - just say you applied for a DTV and are going to cancel your Non - O at the embassy or immigration? I believe you needed to go to immigration and cancel first and they would have provided you 7 days to obtain a new visa status

lady told me at hcm portacabin that they cannot cancel non o outside of Thailand

I did say that exactly I have no desire for 2 visas at same time and the information provided to me was that I was ok to cancel upon return after electing entry on the new DTV

Whether this all pans out is another matter ! Thx for reply and comments
