Can I get a second SIM card for my existing number to use as a WiFi source in Thailand?

Hello, I will spend the next few years without interruption in Thailand and I have a question regarding Internet. I am planning to buy a sim card with unlimited traffic, it will cost about 900THB per month. I would like to know if it is possible to get a second sim card for the same number so I can use it as a wifi source for my apartment. For example I can use an old phone and activate the Mobile Hotspot. Alternatively there are routers that can be equipped with a sim card. So I would always have wifi at home and also on the road unlimited internet. Can anyone tell me if this is possible?

Edit: When i say unlimited, i mean no speed limitations after a certain amount of monthly usage.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question is whether it's possible to obtain a second SIM card that shares the same number for mobile hotspot use in Thailand. Responses indicate that duplicating SIMs is illegal, but some telecom providers offer clone SIMs that use the same data plan for specific cases. Many users suggest getting a portable Wi-Fi device or a separate data-only SIM for continuous connectivity at home and on the go. Additionally, options for affordable home fiber internet and various mobile data plans are also discussed.

Ais has a system called multi sim. both use the data plan and either cad is switchable to become the single phone access card. It works well if you have a phone and a backup as they use the same number. Not an issue if you want a data only connection. For this I use a True sim card in a D link portable router 300 baht a month unlimited data. It is fast enough for all I do dtreaming video included.

You can buy mobile routers and connect as many devices as you want, and you will have internet at home and outside

I think the only way this makes sense is if you plan to use the internet at home, while you are away from home. Like maybe run a server or something (Your IP will change, not a great idea).

If you will only use internet where you are, and you always have your phone with you, you can use the wifi on your phone. I primarily use my phones wifi. In many places in Thailand the cellular+wifi is faster than ground cable+wifi.

I use a dongle, that i purchased years ago here in Thailand, i use it with a sim that i bought at Big C, it cost's me 89 baht a month. though it is a little slow. This is with my laptop buy the way.

when you are in Thailand you should have a look around at DTAC, you can use unlimited internet at a reasonable speed from 190 bath

I have activated my WiFi on my phone and the rest of my family relies on it (normally 2 laptops and 2 phones)

search online you can get 1 year sim data for about 2000-3000 baht for the whole year.

For 800 baht a month, you could have T o T fiber installed in your apartment, 200mbps up 200mbps down. Why use a sim card ?
John *******
Whats more, just about every restaurant, bar, shopping mall in thai cities has free wifi for you to use

Because i want unlimited internet when i'm home AND outside?

if you aren't streaming video over mobile data constantly, you don't need unlimited. Your phone should be able to measure your mobile data usage. I found that 1gb a month is plenty for facebook, google maps, messaging and the occasional voice call. You can get 1gb of mobile data for around 200 baht a month. Mobile carriers always overcharge for unlimited because they are worried about their networks being over burdened

True buying True Sim card on Lasada very cheap

AIS user here. 120 baht for unlimited internet using AIS Fibre and 450 baht for AIS 4G unlimited. That's my monthly expenses for internet.

unlimited good speed seems to be 600 standard. I spend about 450 a month for a 30GB allowance (150 baht for 10GB or 10 days) for my phone on a pay as you go TrueMove SIM I got at the airport (told the staff it needs to not have an expiry date, not sure exactly what the SIM type is). Top up at 7-11, never run out of data despite watching a fair amount of fb and insta videos. You might consider that for your phone and ~600 a month for AIS fiber for the house. But then again I almost never make phone calls because most people and businesses can be contacted on whatsapp, line, fb, insta etc (and I have wifi for video calls). If you have to make actual phonecalls or lengthy video calls on the go, maybe unlimited is better.

@Ni**
You can get unlimited data for less than that mate.. airport plans are more expensive than phone plans anywhere else.

Go into your local True shop and see what else they can get give you. I had DTAC and payed about 400 baht per month for unlimited 6mbps.

oh nice. I was just basing that 600 on the previous comments. Never really looked into it. How long is the contract? at 450 a month I quite like the freedom of PAYG and 4G 4mbps serves my needs fine. Gf tried to hook me up with cheap unlimited but it was 18 months or something, and given how unwelcome they make us feel here it's a gamble lol

Get AIS. They have crazy fast internet, phones and tv. I pay 1000 per month for all of it unlimited.

Alice Waldron Farmer is it 1000 per month for home WiFi and phone service and phone data?

A very high speedHome Fiber Internet Router with AIS is less than 600 Baht a month.

From Lazada you can buy 4 G devices that use a SIM Card. Some are totally portable with a battery - some wired electric only. 700 to 1400 Baht.

Mobile Phones (term used here in Thailand) are available with Two SIM slots. You have to use two different numbers. One SIM is always primary for 4G Internet Connection.

In my opinion the usage plan you described is off target and buys you little at high expense. Phones can be set for auto change from Home or any WiFi to Mobile 4G. You can have maximum speed with my suggestion at an overall lower cost than your proposed plan.

" sim card ... unlimited traffic ... 900THB per month" That is very expensive. On Lazada there are deals with 4G sims, unlimited traffic 10mbps for less than 2000 Baht a year. Search for "true 4g 10mbps" many 1890 Baht a year offers, or "ais 4g 8mbps" also many 1890 Baht a year offers.

I had a promotion with AIS 2 years ago. I have a fiber Internet high speed package for my home. So it has a router and internet for my Tv and cable packages. I also received 1 free unlimited SIM card that I use in my iPad. I believe it costs 641.20 baht a month. I believe in a phone there is additional fees for phone calls and text messages.
Ryan ***********
We had True for iPhones and 3BB at home. Never had an issue. Phone was 350B and Home was 630B per month.

yes, no Problem!

Why would you need separate SIM card when home or on road if it’s cloned WiFi so cheap here
Wylie *******
Home wifi is pretty inexpensive. Is there a reason why you need a second wifi source instead of just setting up a wifi Hotspot with the phone you carry with you?
Kevin *****
SIM cards are cheap and easy to obtain so why not get, as I did, a SIM for data only and pick up a portable wifi device? I got min in China but you can get them on lazada for about 900 baht, smaller than a phone and just as effective

Yeah. I will probably move a lot and don't wanna have the hassle with setting up the existing (possible poor) wifi all the time. It's theoretically possible using my phone as a hotspot but it's a battery killer and i have a lot of things that wanna connect (fire tv) and so on.. So a continuous connection would be a lot better.
Wylie *******
@Manuel ******
gotcha. Makes sense. I assume the cell companies can sell a mobile Hotspot intended for the exact purpose you are looking for. I haven't checked in Thailand but all the carriers do in the US.

Had one in Thailand. They ocall them pocket routers. Think they worked in boarding countries.

Just get a fiber connection at home. 1gb connection for around 600 a month. Easy to do.

ais WiFi and sim unlimited less than 600

1. You can get a sim with unlimited 10 mbps internet for 300 baht/month

2. If you have a post-paid card, all operators give you the option to get a clone SIM card for either a one-time fee of 100-300 baht or a low monthly fee.

3. If you buy a 4G router for 2000+ baht you can use your clone SIM and get great WiFi reception in your home.

Thanks, that's a great answer. Are you sure about the price? Most of the deals have a traffic-cap (Quantity per month, not speed!) somewhere and if i actually want unlimited, i couldn't find something in the price range you suggested.
Steve *******
@Manuel ******
a lot of the good deals are not available anywhere until you ask.

If you walk into a AIS shop and tell them you want unlimited fast internet they'll show you the options available. You can call their customer service and ask too.

Both me and my girlfriend have AIS 300 baht unlimited 10mbps but as you can see in this photo, it gets much faster than expected.
Garrett ***********
No, absolutely not. It is illegal in every country I know of to duplicate a sim card. Sim cards must have a unique number.
