My iPhone isn’t paid off so I can’t use a different sims card. What other option do I have for internet? Do they still do the portable hotspots? Recommendations?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If your iPhone isn't paid off and you can't use another SIM card, there are several options for accessing the internet in Thailand. You can purchase a portable pocket WiFi device, which is available for around 2200 baht for a year of unlimited service. Alternatively, consider buying a cheap unlocked phone to use with a local SIM card or use a spare device as a mobile hotspot. Many places in Thailand also offer free WiFi, including hotels and restaurants. If your phone is locked to a specific carrier, you may have the option to unlock it by contacting your provider, though this may involve a fee and take a few days. Some users suggest using eSIMs or buying a burner phone for temporary use as well.

Use an eSIM then you can leave the SIM card in there.

There are some portable hotspot I think you can rent. For a couple of hundred dollars you can by an older quality phone, which will have share-internet option (mobile hotspot). Maybe

Every phone you can get unlocked by your provider I’m with Tesco and have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and they have unlocked it for me by asking them too
Most time you have to wait for a period of time before you can have it unlocked. Mostly like 2 years.
Otherwise it would defeat the whole purpous of selling a locked phone if you can unlock it right away. They want you to stay with them until the phone is out of style.

My Mum had a big issue with her French sim. They refused to unlock it without her contract ending, so she just had to rely on wifi where available and make sure her roaming was turned off to avoid huge charges.
Most bars/restaurants/hotels will have free wifi ☺️
you can buy pocket wifi with Thai Sim on Facebook market place for approx 400 baht.

Maybe before you buy anything try putting your friend's SIM card in your phone and see if it will work. If it works, just buy a SIM. If it doesn't, you know for sure that you need another solution.
Get a cheap phone here for under bt1000, and a pay as you go sim card, and you're set. Go to the fourth floor of MBK, and you'll have so many cheap phones to choose from you'll be overwhelmed. Get a bt50 pay as you go sim card, and a bt100 top-up card. In just two weeks you'll not need much more than that. A bt100 card is 100 minutes, and if you get close to using it all up you can get a top-up card at any 7-11. Just be aware you need your passport to buy a SIM card. It's part of anti terrorist measures. In the deep south they use cellphones for bombings.
Most (all?) iPhones come unlocked. And companies will almost always unlock for international travel anyways.
Just call them to make sure it is unlocked or have them unlock it
Edit: I clearly am mistaken. Though at one point they were. Now it seems carrier locks are back as a thing.
2 of my last 3 iPhones were on payments and those two were the ones I switched US carriers with (had payments left when I switched). (Sprint to Verizon to T-mobile) At the time I bought the oldest I was told all iPhones were being sold unlocked. Since I haven’t had a locked iPhone (carry financed or not) since then I assumed the policy had continued.
I haven’t had a locked iPhone since my 5S which Sprint unlocked for international travel with a 10 minute phone call.
Had no idea that carrier locks were a thing again since it has been 8 years since I had one locked.

AT&T phones are locked if on payments

guess we have different experiences. I’ve used iPhones since the 5. They’ve always been unlocked, paid off with the US carrier or not. Just swap out the sim. Did exactly this in Thailand with my latest iPhone from late last year. Have done this in several countries besides Thailand over the years. Just buy your sim at the airport or 7. They know what to do.
still very rare to have an unlocked phone if financed through the carrier in the US. I had the same problem and ended up just paying off the rest of my phone balance and it was unlocked within 48 hours.
