Renewing/Extending an OA Visa

My hubby and I have an OA Multi Entry Retirement Visa (issued in uk) which is dated 1 September 2017. Our entry date stamp is 27/09/17 Our admitted until date shown is 26/09/18. We report every 90 days as is usual.

We are returning to the UK in the summer and had planned to get back to Thailand before the Visa expires at the end of August this year, so we could be stamped back in for another year.

However, my niece is getting married on 7th September, so we can’t get back into Thailand before the visa expires.

Can we get an extension before we leave Thailand, and if so how many days before the visa expiry date, or can we get an extension in the UK at the Thai Embassy in London, again if so how many days before the visa expiry date, or do we have to start afresh and get a new visa in the UK? Many thanks for your help in advance.

Sorry. Hubby just asked another question!...When we applied for the visa in uk. We used copy bank statements which had been certified by our Solicitor to show proof of income. If we extend the visa here do we need the original bank statements or certified copies from uk or can we download from internet and present those?

remember IF you do the dates right you aren't applying for a yearly extension of stay inside the country until 2019. Your a ways off from needing that proof of income letter from your consulate.

@Su**
. For the extention of stay you need a minimum of 65,000bt income per month, proven by the pension/income affadavit from your Embassy in Thailand. If you're using banked money then it's 800,000bt seasoned in a Thai bank account for 2 months.

You’re a star. Thanks so much. 😊

You would need to obtain a letter from the British Embassy in Bangkok certifying your income.

Edited my previous post. Made a mistake. You can apply for a 12 month extension of stay up to 45 days before your permission of stay expires. So in this example, starting with April 10th 2019, you can go to local Immigration and extend for 12 months (until May 23rd, 2020).

Suzy Bailey You are correct. Because your visa is a multiple entry non O-A, you can enter Thailand multiple times until its expiry date, and every time you enter you would receive a permission of stay of 12 months.

So entering on May 25th 2018, you will be stamped until May 24th, 2019. Then you apply for a re-entry permit. The reentry permit would expire on May 24th 2019. If you choose single (1,000 baht), it will allow you to enter Thailand once until that date. If you go for multiple entry (3,800 baht), you can enter Thailand as many times as you want until the expiry of the re-entry permit, which in this case is 24th May 2019.

Regardless of when you enter, you will always get admitted until 24th May 2019.

You can also apply for as many single re-entry permits as you wish, so you could start with single, and after you come back to Thailand from the UK, and you want to exit again let's say, you can apply again for a single re-entry permit. Or get multiple from the beginning. Up to you.

Before 24th of May 2019, you will have to either apply for a 12 month extension at local Immigration with proof of income or money in Thai bank, or go back to the UK and get a fresh non O-A.

If you do a border run after the 24th of May 2019, without having extended your last permission of stay, you would receive a 30 day visa exempt, since your non O-A would have long expired (31 Aug 2018).

Should you extend for 12 months, you will also need another reentry permit each time you exit to keep your permission of stay and be able to return on that extension.

Hope that wasn't confusing 😁

Thanks so much Luke. My hubby & I really appreciate your knowledge and help. We got our OA visa for the first time this year and it’s all new to us. So we really do appreciate your inside track on these matters. Looks like we might get to go the wedding after all!

Thank you so much for your replies. It’s much appreciated. Sorry for late reply myself... we flew down to Bangkok to see the family.

Just to clarify. We leave on 5th June 2018.

Our Visa Issue date in uk was 1st Sept 2017. So enter before date is 31 Aug 2018.

We arrived 27 Sept 2017 with admitted until stamp of 26 Sept 2018.

I now have a supplementary question.... If we do a border run before we go back to uk and return to Thailand say May 25th for example. Am I correct in thinking that we get another year until 24th May 2019. But we then get a reentry permit from our local immigration which means we can return 20th September 2018 and still be allowed to stay until 24th May 2019?

Then just before 24th May 2019 we apply for a 1 year visa extension at our local immigration office with proof of income or do we just do a border run and get stamped in for another year?

Once again many thanks!

@Steve ******
thanks so much. We have proof of funds but just weren’t sure how we would manage to get to return to Thailand after 7th September with the visa we had. Really appreciate your help.
Steve *******
You'll need proof of funds for an extention of stay but you will get another year if you stamp in before the visa expires and you will need a re entry permit not to lose your admitted to stay stamp when the visa has expired

I'm just guessing but if your date of issue was 1 Sept 2017 your enter before date would be the 31 Aug 2018 right?

About the only thing you could do is to exit/re-enter the country just before you leave for the UK. That would give you a new "admitted until" stamp dated for the summer of 2019.

Then before you leave get a re-entry permit (because when you return your original visa and the re-entry permit that comes with it will have expired).
Tod *********
The real question is not what your 'admitted until" stamp is dated BUT what is the "enter before" date on the visa itself.
Steve *******
@I**
. Pretty sure the OP said in the summer.
Steve *******
@Lu**
is right, go out of Thailand and return before you leave for England and you'll be stamped in for another year.

You do not say when your leaving Thailand but you do extension early. I think it's 45 days before. You do need to meet financials though.
Colin **********
It depends where you go some immigration offices its only 30days

- To get a 12 month extension in Thailand at local immigration, you need to put 800K baht in a Thai bank account and it needs to be seasoned. Per person.

- You cannot get an extension in the UK, you need to get a new visa.

- You would need to apply for the new visa after your current visa has expired.

- Alternatively, you may consider doing an in-out same day border run at some border close to your location to get stamped for another year before you leave for the UK, but you would need to get a reentry permit (either single or multiple), to be able to return from the UK on the same permission of stay.

To save you the hassle of medical reports and police checks in the UK, and the hassle of having 1.6M baht seasoned locally in Thailand, I would say the best option is to do a border run or exit Thailand for a short vacation somewhere pleasant. 😁
