Hi folks, I live in Chiang Rai, and I want to extend my retirement on my Non-O visa. Can I do this in Mae Sai as well as in Chiang Rai?

TIA!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster inquired about the possibility of extending their Non-O visa from their residence in Chiang Rai. Responses indicated that extensions are typically processed at the immigration office serving the area of residence, which, in this case, is Chiang Rai. There were also discussions regarding experiences at both Mae Sai and Chiang Rai offices, with a suggestion for the poster to visit the Chiang Rai immigration office for their yearly extension, especially given their proximity and the potential confusion regarding which office handles such requests.

They would have sent you to Mae Sai for your conversion to a non o visa because that’s the main immigration office in the province and the Chiang Rai city office doesn’t do them (slightly counterintuitive as Chiang Rai City is obviously the main city in the province) but if Chiang Rai City is ‘your’ immigration office then you’ll need to do your yearly extension there. Mae Sai will likely just send you there.

not to be flippant but your point is what?

You said yourself you're 20 minutes from Chiang Rai Immigrations.

Go over there after they open tomorrow and see where you're supposed to go..

Ok, we’ll in that case, seeing as you may have the option of doing it at either office, I would call both offices and ask them. It usually depends on exactly where your house is, where that falls in the coverage areas of the immigration offices and the way each immigration office operates. As I’m sure you’re aware, government offices in Thailand have flexibility kind of built in to the way they operate so rather than all of us guessing as to what applies in your situation with these immigration offices, I would just give them a call, tell them your address and go by what they tell you.

@Cha****
:O I mixed up my Mai's and Rai's :/

I'd say right after Songkran get your stuff together and go to the Chiang RAI immigration office to see if you can get your year extension there.

Well then, get your documentation together (bank letters, update your bank book, etc) and head over there to apply right after Songkran is over.

That way IF for some reason you can't use that office OR you don't have the correct documentation you still have time to get it together before you run your current 90 days down to nothing..

I have 2 weeks left. on a NEW 90 day Non-O. No way to ask them in advance, because my Thai is not good enough!

Ahh, so you aren't on ANY extension of stay anymore.. :O

You have a NEW 90 day Non-O visa (that you got in country at the Mae Sai immigration office).

In that case I believe you could apply for your yearly extension there.

BUT I'd definitely go and ask them before your current 90 day stamp expires.

Remember most offices allow you to apply for an extension when you have 30 days or less left on your current stamp and you don't lose any days by applying early because they add the extension to your current expiration date.

I had a screw up about 3 months ago, and Mae Sai (I was told it had to be done there) issued me a new Non-O, with a 3 month duration. I am looking to extend this in the next few days.

As a rule you apply for your yearly extension at the immigration office that serves the area where you love. SO I'd say IF you're in Chiang Rai, you'd go there to to apply for your new extension.
