Can I apply for an extension soon (a week or so) after arriving in Thailand? Australian passport so have a 45 day visa exemption and going to apply for an extension. I have a copy of our TM30 from our host who we are with for 1 month (within the 1st 45 days) after that we want to move around a bit so hoping to get the extension while we are at here. In Chiang Rai. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian passport holder can apply for a visa extension in Thailand shortly after arriving, typically within 30 days prior to the expiration of their initial visa stamp. In Chiang Rai, a TM30 form is usually required for extension applications, similar to Chiang Mai. Travelers can also consider options like obtaining a 60-day visa from Laos and then extending it in Thailand for a total of 90 days.

If you’re in bkk you can go right when you land in BKK as long as you land during immigration business hours and you can make it there before they close….

Most offices allow 30 days prior. I’m assuming Chiang Rai will require a TM30 because Chiang Mai do (happy to be corrected). Chiang Mai allow 45 days prior. I don’t know the policy for Chiang Rai. Perhaps they will too. Whatever office they’ll add on the days to your existing stamp.
