Can I extend my 12-month ME OA retirement visa in Thailand by leaving and re-entering at times other than before the expiry date?

Hi there, I will be arriving in Thailand from Australia on a 12 month ME OA retirement visa shortly. Have read a bit about leaving & re-entering on day prior to visa expiry date, it will give a further year in country. My question is, does this still apply if I exit & re-enter Thailand at other times during the year? Thanks for your help!
