Can I claim to be unemployed if I hold a Non-B visa while applying for a Chinese visa?

Hi, esteemed and knowledgeable peers. Question about a non-b. I'm working at school on a non-b and work permit. But soon I'm heading to China to travel... On the chinese visa form it asks if I'm employed / unemployed. If I say employed, it wants to, and presumably will, contact the school. I don't want any problems from the school, as I'm leaving due to their nonpayment of some teachers when they give a months notice. So, I'm not telling them I'm leaving. If I put unemployed, (I then won't have to include the school contact details) the chinese consulate will see I'm on a non-b and employed? So does a non-b mean I'm employed or is it OK to put unemployed with a non-b visa on my passport? Or should I simply do a border run first to revert the visa back to a 30 day visa on entry thing and say im unemployed, thus bypassing all the issues? Hope that makes sense!!! Cheers..

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user on a Q&A platform is seeking advice regarding their situation as they hold a Non-B visa and work permit while planning to travel to China. They are concerned about how to answer employment questions on the Chinese visa application, fearing repercussions from their current employer due to potential non-payment of wages. Several commenters provide insights, suggesting that it is generally safe to state they are employed, as the Chinese consulate may not contact the school. Some recommend 'transposing' contact details to avoid issues, while others advise doing a visa run to revert back to a 30-day entry visa, simplifying the process and allowing the user to legitimately state they are unemployed.

Advice as 'maybe just "accidentally" transpose a couple of digits in the phone number ' seems more suited for some dodgy twatpacker group though.... Hope this group is not turning into a 'how to fool immigration' group.

I've had several Chinese visas (working and tourist) and I don't think the Chinese consulate will actually check with your employer under normal circumstances - it would be too much hassle for them to do this with everyone. I suspect they just want to know you have a stable job and somewhere to go back to, and you'd be risking more by putting down that you're unemployed. They might then ask for bank statements etc., if they're not already. (I think on the last few applications I've done I've just written either employed or self-employed and put down the details of one of my main clients.)

If you're actually worried about this, though I don't think you need to be, maybe just "accidentally" transpose a couple of digits in the phone number so even if they try and contact your employer it won't go through. I think that's less of a risk than lying about your employment status, especially when they can see you have a job in Thailand.

The other issue is that there have been a few reports in the last few weeks about Chinese consulates in SEA (BK, CM, Vientiane at least) not issuing tourist visas to non-residents. You should check that with the consulate for up-to-date info, but I think reentering Thailand with a visa exemption to try and get a Chinese visa will make it far more difficult for you.

Cheers for the info.. I'll do the employed route. I don't think they'll check either, so getting the number accidentally wrong is fine (prob wrong number on school's web site anyway, they're so incompetent).

My cunning plan to do a visa run and come back on visa exempt (or tourist visa) is because that's what I've done when I've changed jobs in Thailand... It would also allow me to legitimately say I'm unemployed and be travelling just like many people do I'm sure... Anyway, I don't have much $ in the bank so I don't wanna be giving them bank statements. I do have a letter of invite from my friend in China though.... I'm sure that will help.

What makes you think the center here in Bangkok that issues visas for china will contact your place of employment?

It's on the visa app form...asks whether employed or unemployed...if employed it asks for employer's details. So if consulate check, the employer will know...and could make some problems....

Then the consulate will realise something's wrong and may not grant me a visa...

I just don't want to say I'm employed and the chines consulate contact the school who will then realise I'm offski and create a problem

Best to do a visa run and convert it back to 30 day VOE (visa on entry - if that's right terminology)then.... Then I can say I'm unemployed. Agreed?

OK, visa exempt...

Visa exempt entry, a visa on arrival is totally different.

There is nothing to stop someone getting the paperwork for a Non-B visa from a company, then not taking the job. The visa still remains valid.

Ok cheers, as I thought.

Read my post below
Andrew ******
How is it incorrect?
Lloyd ********
Still incorrect

Ok, so you are on an extension of stay based on employment, ergo - you must be working.

That's what I thought Andrew...

I don't know what extension of stay is? Or at least what it looks like. Can i check it's a stamp on the passport? I got the non-b in Lao and converted it or used it, (or whatever they do with it) to get the WP and now I do 90 day reports at imm....
Andrew ******
Its impossible to have a none immigrants B visa without working lol you can only get a none immigrants B visa if you're working!
Lloyd ********
Incorrect !
Lloyd ********
Do you have a visa or an extension of stay ? You could have a Non-B and be unemployed, but an extension would be proof of employment.
