So just to be very clear...If I have the DTV visa but I do not wish to activate it upon my entry to Thailnd because I'm planning a short stay, do I get to choose whether to use it and when or does it get activated by default once it's in the immigration computer data base?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Once you possess a DTV visa, it is automatically activated upon issuance by the embassy, not when you enter Thailand. Therefore, you do not have a choice to delay activation during your entry. Upon entering Thailand, using your visa will grant you a 180-day stay, regardless of whether your visit is intended to be short.

It’s already activated…

If you have it, it is already activated as shown on the visa (valid from...valid until). The validity has already begun as soon as approved

Why would you not want to activate it? The visa expiry doesn't change, so what difference does it make?

No, you don't get a choice. If you have a visa, you use it to enter Thailand. Also it makes absolutely ZERO sense not to use it. You get 180 days EVERY TIME you enter Thailand. So even if you're only coming for a short stay, you get 180 day stamp. Then you leave and return and get 180 day stamp.

Your visa was activated the moment the embassy issued. It's valid for 5 years from that date. You're not gaining any extra time. The clock has already been ticking.

Ok. So there is no limit for the number of times I enter Thailand with the DTV during its validity?

You applied for it and paid money, without knowing what it meant?
