Can I apply for the Digital Nomad DTV from my home country while not physically present there?

Can I apply for the DTV from my home country if I’m not actually located there?

I am from the US and have been in Thailand for a few months now, planning to apply for the digital nomad DTV. I was going to do it from Laos and use a parent sponsorship but learned that Asian countries don’t take parent sponsorship letters. My parents transferred money into my account but only a few weeks ago.

I’m hearing that the DTV may get cancelled or the requirements may change, so I’d like to apply sooner than later. Can I leave Thailand (go to Hanoi for example) and put my location as my residence in the US and apply from the US embassy in DC?

Additionally, does anyone have a definitive answer on if the Hanoi embassy has a seasoning requirement for the 500,000 baht?

Thank you in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus is that you cannot apply for the digital nomad DTV visa from the US embassy if you are not physically present in your home country. You must apply at a Thai embassy or consulate in the country where you are currently located. If you're in Vietnam or Laos, you should apply from the Thai consulate there. Additionally, there is confusion regarding the funds' seasoning requirement; while some say a general requirement is three months, others noted they were approved after a shorter time. It's emphasized that you should remain in the country where you're applying until your visa is approved.

As for the seasoning, I had the money for 3 days and got approved. It depends on the officer that reviews it, as is anything with immigration.

Stay in Hanoi for a week, get approved, don't try to finesse. They are pretty fast ( 6 working days for myself)

You must apply via (and remain in until approval) the consulate for your current jurisdiction.

Where are you hearing that the DTV may be cancelled or requirements changed? The Christmas Elf's?

You can only apply using the Thai consulate where you are physically located. You can't pick and choose the consulate other than by travelling to the location of the consulate and then applying. You also have to remain in a location relevant to the consulate until the visa process completes

I’m also thinking to apply through the Thai embassy in DC even tho I will be in Malaysia because I have seen posts about Malaysia embassy is a bit difficult. All the visas are through online. How will they know where we are as long as we leave Thailand.

Don't do it... you MUST BE IN THE COUNTRY WHERE YOU APPLIED FOR YOUR DTV VISA. AND stay in that country until the decision is known. PERIOD 🩸

How do they know? By asking for every single page of your passport and proof that you’re in the country you claim to be. You can also check the many older posts explaining how they manage to do that. 🤔😏 Don’t try to be smarter than you are just follow the basic application rules.

Your location is where you are physically present on application and they will ask proof that you are there and you should remain there until approval or refusal.

I did a search using the group search tool, keywords Hanoi seasoning, read the first result

You cannot apply via your home country’s Thai embassy if you are not physically present in that country. Thai embassies process applications based on current physical presence within their jurisdiction, not nationality or stated residence alone. If you are in Asia, you must apply through a Thai embassy or consulate in the country where you are actually located. Listing the US as your location while being in Hanoi or elsewhere would normally result in the application being rejected or cancelled. So in your case, you must leave Thailand and apply from a nearby country such as Vietnam or Laos, using the embassy or consulate that has jurisdiction over where you are physically present at the time of application. There’s a general three months seasoning requirement for a DTV, som foreign missions require six months. The process in Hanoi is known to be quite straightforward.
