Enquiry — Cambodian long-stay visa + Thailand DTV from Phnom Penh

Hi everyone! My partner and I are French and we'd like to apply for the

Thailand DTV (Workcation) through the Phnom Penh embassy instead of France.

A few questions for anyone who's done it recently:

1. Since the 31 August 2026 rule change, does Phnom Penh accept a RECENT

Cambodian long-stay visa (EB) as proof of residence for the DTV? Or do they

require longer-term residency?

2. Does Phnom Penh require the 500,000 THB to sit in your account for 3 months,

or do they accept recent funds / current balance?

3. My partner doesn't have her own 500k THB. If we're married, can she apply

as my dependent (spouse) through Phnom Penh once mine is approved?

Would love to hear from anyone who applied from Cambodia recently.

Thanks a lot!
Summary so far
A couple is seeking information on applying for the Thailand DTV (Workcation) visa through the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh while holding a recent Cambodian long-stay visa. They have specific questions regarding the acceptance of their visa as proof of residency, financial requirements like maintaining 500,000 THB in their account, and the possibility of applying as dependents if one is already approved. Responses indicate skepticism about the acceptance of their Cambodian visa for the application and suggest contacting the embassy for confirmed requirements. There's also advice regarding the handling of the financial documentation and independence in the visa application process.

Why not apply for the DTV in France prior to your departure to Cambodia? Sure you will not get to use your DTV the full 5 years, but since you don't hold permanent residency in Cambodia, I believe this is your best option. That and you will follow the new regulations as they are meant to be.

there are more than a few agents out there who will get foreigners that EB visa for cambodia then apply for a DTV thru the thai consulate in Phnom Penh..

It's the "work around" agents came up with for the "must apply in a country where you hold legal residence" rule.

Some agencies have an all in price for everything, but you have to stay in Cambodia I think 6 weeks or so.

and the applicants are going to be pissed when they're rejected and money's down the drain. They shouldn't try to skirt the law and just gone back to their actual country of residence to apply.

those agents offering that have it down so it works and people get the DTV issued

The visa is no evidence of residency

but if you are renting an apartment with for example an electricity or water bill in your name, that could maybe work.

The 500 k would have to come from a Cambodian bank account, obviously. And they would have to have been there for at least three months.

How is renting an apartment a proof of permanent residence?

The 500k per applicant can be in any account whereever in the world.

I think it is easier to put the 500k for your partner/spouse on het own account.

Not all embassies accept sponsor letter and together you need to have 1M one way or another.

Cambodia 12-month visas - regardless of type - are not 'permanent residence' status, and would never be accepted by Thai immigration. They're not even temporary residency status. Of course you can't apply for the DTV from Cambodia; I really don't understand how this question is still being asked. How people are trying to get blood from a turnip is truly confounding.

I think you have to go back to France. Because EB is not permanent residence. To be a "permanent resident" I think you need something along the lines of the US Green Card. The one year visas you get in places like Cambodia, and have to keep renewing aren't enough.

The Embassy’s website does provide a number which you can call regarding visa inquiries (
********************************************************************************************
They will be able to tell you if your EB visa is sufficient to apply for a DTV there but I personally doubt it.

You can't apply from Cambodia since EB isn't a permanent residence.

Incorrect. You don't know which Cambodian visas Thai consulates in Cambodia regard as constituting 'permanent residence'.

EB is not a permanent residence, so I think you connot apply in Cambodia.

If you are not married your partner needs to apply separately.

Many embassies are accepting temporary residence permits. Not sure if EB visa counts as residence permit.

DaringHamster7780 Do you have a list of that? The official requirements are PERMANENT residency.

Do you have a list? Otherwise, how could you dispute which type of visas in other countries DON'T constitute Permanent Residence status?

DaringHamster7780 we have no reports of that. Permanent residency is what's needed.

Singapore, Vietnam accept non-permanent residents via employment, investment etc. not tourists.

DaringHamster7780 Japan used to accept non perm residents now it is perm residents only.

DaringHamster7780 I think when they wanted temporary residents to apply they would have specified that in the requirements.

I don't have a list. Even though on the website it says permanent residency some embassies in Europe are accepting a temporary residence permit. In Europe a permanent residency is given after living on TRP for several years. They just don't want tourists to apply from different countries. I think Japan also accepts a temporary residence permit.
