TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can apply for a 60-day tourist visa in Malaysia if you have an American passport, but you will need to apply for an extension in Thailand. It's advisable to check the specific requirements on the Thai embassy's website for the location you plan to visit, as processes may vary by place. For instance, the Kuala Lumpur embassy requires appointments while Penang does not. One user shared their experience of applying at the KL Thai embassy, which was organized and efficient, taking only two days to process.

Did mine last week at the KL Thai embassy. Very helpful and well organised. Book an appointment online. Their website very useful. Step by step guide. 2 days to process. They even gave me a 3 month tourist visa chop! But I don't leave for Phuket for another 2 weeks, so will need a one month topup after arriving.
did you have any trouble with the verification code for the appointment? The system wouldn't accept our Canadian or Australian numbers. We ended up having to use a friend's number in Thailand. We were told that they give you the appointment slip for pick up when you are finished the drop off. Is this correct or did you need to make a seperate appointment? Thanks!
The VISA is a 90 day visa. The visa expires 90 days from the day it is issued by the embassy and you must enter Thailand within those 90 days. But the permission to stay granted by the visa is only 60 days.

You can apply for a 60 day tourist visa in Malaysia. You’d have to apply for the extension in Thailand.
Visit the website of the embassy/consulate you are going to use and print off their checklist.
KL require appointments. Penang doesn’t. I’m not sure about Kota Bharu but I don’t believe they require one.
