Will I face penalties for extending my visa after it expires on a weekend when the immigration office is closed?

A bit urgent: I have 30 days visa exempt that expire tomorrow, 27. May. I plan to get a 30 day extension, but I just learned the office is closed saturdays. Will they sanction me for coming monday, or do they accept as my expiry day was closed? I don’t have time today. Btw, I hope for answers based on knowledge, not assumptions.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user holds a 30-day visa exemption set to expire on May 27 and faces closure of the immigration office due to the weekend. Several commenters advise that as long as the user visits the office on the next business day (Monday), they should not be penalized for a minor overstay, as it is typically waived when the office is closed on the expiration date. The user later confirmed that they successfully received a 30-day extension without penalties, reinforcing that immigration authorities have been lenient in such situations.

To everyones info, this morning I went to have my extention, I arrived 10am and I just got my passport back with the 30 days stamp, it took less then 90 minutes. No one even mentioned overstay, even if my expiredate was 27. May, so I guess it is as I hoped; they don’t charge overstay if the office is closed on your expiryday, as long as you renew first available day. Back in 2020 I showed up three days ahead of my expirydate, and was refused, having to make a new trip on the expiryday. I understand from other posts here that they have changed that rather meaningless practice. However, intensively interesting to read uninformed peoples view on others time schedule, which they know nothing about, and which is completely irrelevant to my question.

My husband had the same situation as you last month. And I asked immigration. They said it would be fine if it was a holiday. They grant you. This can be done on the next working day, that is Monday and if you go after Monday it will be considered overstay.

The show little mercy since you could have renewed a week ago - smile if they let you stay and pay the overstay penalty.

It would not be urgent if you did it early. And for future reference government offices are closed on weekends and holidays too.

Really you just learned that a government office is closed on a weekend, wow that’s just amazing but then again I guess your government offices in your country are open on the weekends….you can do it on Monday they might get you for an overstay charge of ฿500 per day….don’t get caught by the BiB over the weekend

If TM6 is not applicable to you, don't worry about it.

But you need TM30, which your accommodation provider should register within 24 hours of your check-in.

Screenshot of the TM30 registration is fine. Preferably a clear screenshot, which you can print out and submit with your application.

You are welcomed. 👍

Also important to take note.. Depending on your accommodation address, you need to go to the Immigration office in your province.

For example, if you go to the Immigration office at IT Square Lak Si (for Bangkok province) when your address is in Samut Prakan province, they will ask you to go to the Immigration office in Samut Prakan.

So, check the full address of your accommodation to determine which province you are in.

One work-around for the Immigration Office at IT Square Lak Si is to use a Bangkok address on your form - e.g. your embassy's address in Bangkok. They will overlook it and allow you to apply there. This work-around was suggested by the Immigration Officer there.

If you entered Thailand via 90-day Visa Exempt (e.g. South Korea), you might want to contact the Immigration Bureau to check if you are eligible for "visa extension" and if so, what is the maximum days of extension. It is not automatic 30-day extension for every nationality.

Did you enter Thailand on Tourist Visa or Visa Exempt?

If Visa Exempt, it is IT Square Lak Si.

Visa Extension @ IT Square Lak Si

I'm not quite sure why you waited until the last day as you had 30 days to apply for an extension. They'll likely stamp your passport with a stamp that says any fine was waived due to office closure as long as you go on Monday.

Be careful not to have any police interactions on Sunday or you'll likely be arrested for being on overstay.
