I currently have a 1 year Non-O visa marrried to Thai. USA passport. I have a bank account with the necessary amount of money got future extensions. I am planning to go back to the states for a bit but want to have the option for future Non-O visas and extensions. I want to put my wife’s name on my account for purposes of unforeseen circumstances (I.e. death or incapacitation) so she is able to handle my finances. My question is will the bank account still be acceptable for the purposes of the Non-O visa or does the bank account have to be in my name and my name alone for the next time I apply for the visa? Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has a Non-O visa linked to their marriage in Thailand and plans to add their wife's name to their bank account for access in unforeseen circumstances. Community members advise against this, stating that having a joint account could invalidate future visa extensions. Instead, they recommend setting up a Thai will to ensure the wife can manage finances if the user becomes incapacitated.

Or (if you fully trust your wife 😉 ) get an online access and give it to her. Simple Solution.

David Pawsey upon death the bank accounts are locked by the banks... So ATM card will not work

I never understand why admin remove some comments here. I advised to just leave an ATM with his Mrs and comment gets removed. Its a simple solution for him as his concern is giving his wife access to the cash if he dies. Only difference is her name won't be on the account. Very simple solution to his problem.

both are good recommendations but it's not legit. If he dies and then she uses the money, on the legal aspect, she's stealing the estate beneficiaries - even though he gave her his approval to use the funds, hence the good way to do it is having a thaï will written up. Also, the bank's term of use forbids to give your password/pin number away to someone else so he wouldn't be covered in case of fraud.

Absolutely agree, I have consulted it with the laywer. In case of death second person can legally manage the funds deposited on joint account only.

agree my wife passed and of course I still had access to the joint accounts in Thailand and USA.

Unless she loses the card. Set up online banking , give her the password and, God forbid, anything happens she can transfer into her own account.

who's going to tell them if he dies abroad ?

The fact they were looking for a joint account, I don't think it would be that much of a concern about her transferring it.

wise decision 😊

nope, you will not be able to use a joint account for future extensions UNLESS you have double the required amount in it. <- meaning for a marriage extension you'd need 800K baht (immigrations looks at it as half is yours and half is hers)
James ********
DO NOT DO IT...It will invalidate your next extension. Get a Thai Will naming her as beneficiary.
