Hi, my wife & I will be moving to Thailand to retire. We know we have to have THB800,000 each to meet the Non O retirement visa. Do we have to have two bank accounts (1 for my wife & 1 for me) reflecting the THB800,000 each or can we deposit THB1,600,000 in one bank account in both our names?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a Non O retirement visa in Thailand, it is generally required that each person has their own bank account with at least 800,000 THB. While some immigration offices may accept joint accounts, it can vary, and establishing separate accounts is often advised for easier processing. It is essential to consult with the local immigration office for specific requirements and flexibility regarding joint account acceptance.

If you are getting your Non O retirement visa in the U.K. you can also show £20,000 on your UK bank account. I got mine through the Thai consulate in London.

@Desiree ********
that only lasts 90 days does it not?
Desiree *********
@Paul *******
The retirement visa is 1 year and after you can get an extension for another year

An OA visa obtained outside Thailand is one year, but it require health insurance. Perhaps that is what you have?
Desiree *********
@Paul *******
Yes incl health insurance
Paul ********
@Desiree ********
type O does not require health insurance and is 90 days only if obtained outside Thailand, but can be converted easily to a 15 month visa.
Paul ********
@Desiree ********
not when you obtain it from outside Thailand

@Paul *******
Yes I did :)

Hubby and I have a joint account with the required amount in it and had no dramas getting our non o. We went to Hua Hin for ours, not sure if that makes a difference.

did you have to deposit THB1,600,000 to cover you both?
Mary ********
@Craig ********
yes we did and have maintained it for over a year, though we do know we could drop a bit below, it's just easier to do that.

thank you.

Only one needs the bank account and funds if you are married your wife can get like a dependant Visa
Paul ********
@Mal ****
If the man dies then the dependents visa is revoked, not ideal.
Mary ********
@Paul *******
that's exactly why we both got our non o visas. Having to leave as soon as your partner passes would be additional stress no one needs.
Graham ******
@Mal ****
That normally has to be obtained from your home country if that particular Embassy will actually sell one

Put 800 into your account and your wife. Just attach it to your visa. That's all, and you don't need any more money.
Dennis *********
actually only 1st person needs the 800k. 2nd one can do a "follow along visa" or some similar name, based on the spouses retirement visa. catch is have to wait 12 months. AFIK can't use joint account, just create 1 for you, and 2nd joint account.

FYI, if you have investments or pension that provide you a $80,000.00 a year income? The Long Term Resident “Wealthy Pensioner” visa is the best way to go.

unfortunately I only have rental income which is deemed as passive income & don’t count.

Dave Goodman has been a mentor on my application and has successfully navigated the process.

@Craig ********
You are mistaken. An acquaintance I met on one of these groups has helped me with my application, and he just received his last month and he shared that it was with his submissions of lease agreements on his rental properties back home.

you will most probably each need a bank account on one name only. As soon as you received your 1-year Extension Of Stay Permits, visit a lawyer and each one of you set up a Thai Last Will for these assets you keep in Thailand.

Speak to a visa agent, I think you will be pleasantly surprised 😮
Paul ********
My point exactly, the agent saved me time, frustration and money. Also I have a wife so the savings are doubled. Thinking outside the box is the smart way to go in considering the savings as well as the cost!

@Nigel *******
u do? Then you have to fairly clueless financially to have 800k doing nothing in a bank lol. Cmon man. You pay the 1900 for that only if you have no financial clue whatsoever
Todd *********
@Nigel *******
who’s clueless =

You. I made just over 13% average the last 4 years on mine. I get that the UK is a backward 💩 hole, but surely even the average Brit can figure out how to do better than £700. You should be embarrassed. And an agent facilitated renewal is 16k baht. You’re welcome for the the education but I would wager your meagre £700 that you will continue to stand in line at the bank and immigration every year thinking you are saving a few shillings. 😂😂 Can’t fix stupid
Todd *********
@Nigel *******
agents legal and make your life easy. If you love standing in line every year do it yourself. 😂

@Nigel *******
‘if it’s legal’ 🙏😂😂

Separate accounts. Not easy to get joint account in Thailand.
Steve **********
@Fi ********
can get joint accounts at Bangkok Bank, ( have 2 ), but dont know if Immig accepts anymore.
Fi *********
@Steve *********
Bangkok Bank wouldn’t allow me to have joint account with my husband!
Paul ********
@Steve *********
Immigration states no joint accounts. Whether that is enforced though is another matter
Steve **********
@Paul *******
had the issue about 14 years ago, IO told me to change bank. Told bank, they called Immig... Immig then called me to apologize.

Same as us, IO's have bad days too.
Paul ********
@Steve *********
Things have changed since then and change often and also between different provinces.
Bart **************
@Fi ********
why not? I didn't have any problems.
Peter *********
You both have to have your own bank account with
*****
0 baht deposited in a current account
Nigel **************
Suggest you check with the IO u will be using.
Brandon ************
Some immigration offices require separate accounts and some allow joint accounts. But it'll be easier overall if you both have your own account.
