I am applying to open a bank account to obtain a 1 year extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national. The bank tells me to open a joint account with my wife but I have seen at least two sites where an account in my name only was required. What is the official requirement and if it’s a single account in my name how to convince my bank of this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirements for opening a bank account to obtain a one-year extension of stay in Thailand based on marriage can vary. While the bank suggests a joint account with your Thai spouse, previous information indicates that a single account in your name may also be acceptable. Some users recommend contacting your local immigration office for confirmation, as policies can differ between locations. Additionally, if using a joint account, note that you may need to deposit the full required amount for financial verification.

I'm afraid this post is going to be about how to open/manage your bank account with a bank.

Thank you, everyone, for your contribution. please contact to one of the moderators to re-open this post If you have any additional information regarding the bank account for financial requirements for a visa/extension.

Make it simple, your name only. Ask if the bank can designate your wife as the beneficiary of the account if you die.

If not, get a will, which is probably a good idea anyway. Things like designating her to decide your medical care if you are disabled and unable to decide yourself.

it’s a very good to get the account in my name only. That way it will be there when I need it.

If that bank won’t allow it in your name only, shop other branches of it or other banks.

As a rule, you can use a joint account that includes your name. But when you use it, you need to put double the amount of money into the account. (only the average by the number of names is considered as yours)

In your case, you need to put 800K thb instead of 400K thb in the joint account to meet the financial requirement for a 1-year extension based on being a spouse to a Thai national.

But you'd better contact your local immigration office to get confirmation they accept a joint account. Some offices just don't prefer those.
