TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement to leave Thailand every 3 months on a Non-O Visa based on marriage arises from the visa's limitations, allowing only 90 days per entry. This can lead to overstaying if not adhered to. Some visa holders opt for multi-entry visas for convenience, but many prefer switching to a yearly extension at immigration, which requires proof of financial stability, thus granting the ability to stay longer without the need for frequent border runs.

So with multiple re entry you get 90 days each time. After the original 1 year is up can you easily extend for another year without funds or insurance?

okay you can ONLY get a year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa from a thai consulate (some consulates issue it based on marriage with no proof of funds). That visa gives you a 90 day stamp when you enter thailand, when it runs down you go to a border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country then stamp back into thaialdn to get a new 90 day entry stamp. You do that for the whole year the visa is valid for.

Now as to the answer to your second question;

no, to get a year extension inside the country you need to meet the proof of funds and submit the documents required for the type of extension you're applying for

@Paul ******
you don’t extend the visa - you get a new visa. If you leave/enter just before the visa expires you can get an extra 90 days.

So far on my multi non-o marriage visa I have been in and out 12 times. I have 3 more trips planned next year which means at least 15 times I’ve left and come back into Thailand. 5000bhat visa is perfect for this

I have same visa. I work outside the kingdom so leaving before 90 days is easy. Just renew next year if still married. No need for me to deposit the money, yet.

@Peter ********
i have used the same visa as you for the last 5 yrs for me it suits its purpose could extend but quite happily going to Mae sai every 90 days and going to Savannakhet to renew visa i havent had any problems even when i do my report back for TM 30 ect always asked why not extend I just say not yet with a smile

On the old system I got a 1 yr visa for 15 yes no problems at all.

As I dont fully understand the new system , I've no idea how to get even a 6 month visa once a yr. It's all I need.

@Tod ********
thx much appreciated.

if you're married to a thai, get a 90 day single entry Non-O visa, come in get stamped in for 90 days, then apply for the 60 day visit family extension for 1900baht at the immigration office.

That'd buy you 5 months without leaving the country.

OR

get a year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa based on marriage and then only use it for half the year (I know not the most economical choice :/ )

Why do you want a 6 month visa? What's your plans? You should make your own post and we may be able to answer your questions or help you out
Ad *******
Because they want your money
Tod *********
if that was the case they'd be far easier to get then they are now

I think he means "why is there such a visa and what was the logic behind when it was invented"

My answer, I have no idea
Daniel ************
@Jani *******
also always wondered... I can only think they want to make sure we're alive and able to leave 🤣

@Jani *******
interesting question though. It would be nice to know what the original intention was.
Mark *****
If you are planning to live here I would get a single non O and extended for 12 months, better than leaving ever 90 days which is a pain in the ass plus expensive
Jelly ******
@Mark ****
expensive or not depends completely on where you live
Alf ***********
If so, he needs a re-entry permit, not an "exit-permit"
Benjamin ******
Mark Day: I thought the multiple entry re-entry permits were unlimited. Is this new?
Alf ***********
No visa extends by leaving the country.

@Mark ****
can you travel out of the country on a single non O ? If so does it extend it another year?
Tod *********
as
@Paul ********
stated IF you meet the financial requirements (proof of 40K baht a month in income OR 400K baht in a thai bank accoutn in your name only for 2 months before you apply for an extension) you can apply for a yearly extension of stay at the immigration office and not have to border bounce every 90 days.

Most people on the year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa based on marriage either don't want to meet the proof of funds, can't meet it, OR travel so extensively that it is easier to just get that year-long visa (because it's unlimited entry) and then bounce every 90 days.
Paul *********
If you have a multi entry non-0 based on marriage it is required by that Visa type.

One can always change to a yearly extension (by meeting the requirements) at your immigration office.
Michael ********
because if you don't you will be on overstay ;) Pretty good purpose :)
Martin *******
Because it only allows 90 days per entry....
