Why is a non-O retirement visa more effective when obtained inside Thailand compared to outside?

Why is non-O retirement from outside Thailand is not as effective as non-O inside Thailand? Is there a specific reason?
Answer summary
The conversation discusses the differences between obtaining a non-O retirement visa from within Thailand versus applying for it from outside the country. Several comments highlight that the main advantage of applying from inside Thailand is the ability to directly convert a tourist visa to a retirement visa without needing to leave the country. Additionally, some users mention practical considerations, such as opening a Thai bank account more easily after entering the country with the visa. Others express frustration with the changing visa rules and the bureaucratic processes involved in both scenarios.

When applying from Thailand or applying from another country, both processes lead to the same visa.

When applying from Thailand, you need official documents from your (Thai) bank issued on the same day that you visit the Immigration Office to apply for your visa. That timeline can be challenging as the bank opens at 11am and then you have to go to Immigrations and step into the (waiting) queue before they close.

When applying from another country, you submit your bank documents online and there is no physical visit to the Immigration Office for this purpose.

Any feedback from others in this group to this question?

You can only get a non-O outside Thailand, in the country of your residence/passport via the Thai embassy of that country (online only). It is always valid for 3 months only. Once you obtain the Visa you have 90 days to enter Thailand on the NonO. Once in Thailand it is valid for 90 days. After 60 days you can extend it for 1 year, if you meet the required criteria. And then it can be extended year after year, always for 1 year. So I guess what they mean is the original from outside Thailand is valid for 3 months only, the immigration extension for 1 year. But you can't get an extention without an original 3 month visa.
NongTong *****

outside - is entry level. That is why it is easy to get and last 60 days.
RadiantC********

These days one should get their non-O outside the country. That way, there's no need to have an onward or return (round-trip) ticket when entering the country, less likely to be questioned by immigration and you can immediately open a Thai bank account if you don't already have one. I don't understand why people still want to go through the conversion route. They will eventually scrap that method anyway...easy enough to apply for a non-O outside of Thailand including in neighboring countries.

Theoretically a non O is only available outside Thailand, usually though not exclusively in your home nation. A 90 day non O is void on passing immigration at your port of entry. That gives you 90 days to extend to whatever category you want or fit, usually on the basis of retirement but there are many categories, commonly called retirement visa etc. They aren't visa's, they're extensions of the original 90 day non O.

Dave Owen Over 50's can enter Thailand on a visa exemption or tourist visa and apply for a Non O at their local immigration Office for 2,000THB if the applicant meets the banked money or monthly income criteria. It is available inside Thailand as well.

A friend of mine is in the process of getting a Non O in Thailand with his current in country DTV.

Ian Hornby well I suppose there is that but you won't be getting a new bank account on a visa exempt or tourist visa.

You are using language that is confusing. Go to Thai E-visa and review the types of long stay visas. No retirement visas in Thailand just permission to renew annually after requalfication.

Non O- enter on a 2 month visa and apply for long stay inside. The benefit= health insurance not mandatory.

Non OA- qualify while outside with mandatory medical insurance.

Same

/ month or 800k in the bank.
Tom ********
Tom ********
It is a 5 year + 1 renewal. You qualify with extra money of 3 million baht in your account for 1 year + 1 year of 400k insurance. Then you must maintain 1.5 million in the bank with 400k slated for insurance. You must keep 2 million in bank and report every 90 days and renewal requires same in 5 years. Good one! More expensive but Thailand is changing
Exit **********
Exit **********
Tom Raines there is another difference, too.

Whereas the -OA visa (applied in Thailand) don´t require insurance, it requires the THB 800.000 on a Thai-bank-account.

The non-OA applied abroad requires insurance for the full duration of the visa. Equivalent of THB 800.000 needs to be proofed, but can be on ANY bank-account in the world.
Carlos *********
Carlos *********
Exit Strategy I have the Non-OX Visa (5yr, still has 3 years left to run) it only required the purchase of 12 months of Medical Insurance. I literally tried to purchase 24 months as I didn't want to deal with the renewal whilst in Thailand. Insurer would not allow it. Visa was issued on 12 months stand alone.

So much uncertainty in Thailand with all the different visas, rules and regulations.

I have just got back to Australia from a 5 week trip to Thailand.

I was researching retirement rules and suitability.

I have decided not to retire there.

I can enter just about all Asian countries, and stay for up to 90 days in each of them, and 180 days in any year.

So i have decided to just move around as the season and weather dictate.

Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, india, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore.

Go were I want, when I want, with whoever I want.

Thailand is very nice, and easy to live, but after 90 days, I will enjoy a change of scenery.

RadiantCamel1017 Manila or Cebu are both big cities with hospitals like anywhere on earth. And a long way from most islands.

The problem is 7000 islands with really lousy health care. Let’s not pretend it’s anything but. As good as Thailand lol? Cmon man.

Severe weather and typhoon alley have little appeal for sure. And the food is pretty lousy.

Yes- Philippines is easier with English for sure. But really lousy infrastructure nationwide remains a significant barrier.

The beaches and ocean are phenomenal though.

Todd McGowan Medical care in Manila and other large cities is great and every bit as good as Thailand. The severe weather however doesn't appeal. The infrastructure is definitely not as good and while most people speak English, if you can integrate into Thai life and speak Thai, the language barrier won't be a thing anymore.

I don't completely understand your question, but I would say it just is the other way around.

For getting non-o outide Thailand you don't need to have the money in a Thai bank account, and you are able to open a bank account in Thailand with the visa.

When you are inside you can only change from visa exempt or tourist visa to non-o if you have already money on a Thai bank account and you Immigration office will do this change for you.

Alexey Shipulin I let my OA visa lapse as I went to Cambodia with no re-entry permit. That happened during the time of 60 day visa exempt. At the end of the 60 days I applied for 1 year non O retirement visa having had the required 800k in the bank for a long enough time. My immigration office processed the application as I had bank letters, proof of rental and full colour copy of passport. When you submit documents, remember to sign every page. As an indication of Thai bureaucracy, my first application for OA visa, submitted to Thai Embassy in London, required a police record check. I took the original but they said it had to be notarized by a lawyer. I went to a lawyer and requested the notarization but the lawyer said she couldn't notarize the original but could notarize a photocopy. I returned to the Thai Embassy in London and presented the notarized copy which was accepted. So, original no good but a notarized copy acceptable. Logic? I don't know.

What? A non-O from outside of Thailand is exactly the same as one from inside, with the only difference being a non-O that you receive inside of Thailand is a "zero" entry visa, since it's activated as soon as it is issued and you're already in Thailand.

They both grant 90-days, as they are 90-day visas.

Guess my office doesn’t. I’ve been here for 14 years on a B visa, marriage and retirement.

I had to leave the country to change from marriage to retirement.

Then I lost my retirement visa because I thought I had a multiple entry , but didn’t , and I had to leave the country to get a 90 non-retirement visa first before I could renew and get a one year again.

They refused converting a tourist to a retirement unless I had a letter from my embassy and my embassy stopped issuing letters 5 years ago.
