Hi there, I am new to the group apologies for the following questions, but I can’t see a clear answer.

I’m a British expat who needs to apply for an Immigrant O visa, I know the security deposit rules etc. But it all seems chicken & egg how to get my visas organised. Am I correct that I would book a return flight on a 30 tourist visa, arrive in Bangkok go to my destination ( Hua Hin). Get an extension for an extra 30 days get an agent to work the miracle of opening a bank for a tourist. Send over 800.0000 Thai baht. Apply for an immigrant O visa, h when the money has been “ seasoned” for 2 months and then apply for an immigrant O visa? It all seems a bit hair sparingly, tight on deadlines & visas …plus a potential waste of a flight? Not that is important in the scheme of things I am a single woman getting a bit overloaded🤪 Can anyone please shed a fraction of light…please
Answer summary
The post discusses the confusion faced by a British expat regarding the application process for an Immigrant O visa in Thailand. Several commenters suggest that the expat should apply for a NON-O visa before traveling to Thailand, which grants 90 days of entry. They recommend opening a Thai bank account upon arrival, depositing 800,000 baht, and then obtaining a 12-month extension after the funds have been in the account for two months. The advice emphasizes handling the visa application process personally, especially to avoid high agent fees and complications.

Do your Non O Visa in your home country 45 to 30 days before you intend to leave.

When you apply using the online Thai E visa system you will need to show three months of bank statements for the 800'000 Thai baht or the 65'000 thai baht per month of pension income in your account.

Once you have the approval and you get to Thailand you need to open a Thai bank account and must use the 800'000 Thai baht to season in a Thai bank account for two months to get your 12 month extension.

There is a few hoops in the paperwork required to get the residency certificate from immigration.

I took a photo of the Chiang Mai immigration office handout for the letter of residency certificate it will give you an idea of what's required.

But best to check the local immigration office where you are just in case?

Good luck with it all.

You Can Not come here on a tourist Visa, the Best to Retire is the Non O, then follow all the rules, you can not mess around you need to do it quick, if nothing else coming here on a Non O Visa it will be way cheaper to get your extension stamp

Get your 90 day Non-O before arriving. Do your work of Bank Account and Thai Sim in the first 30 days. Then season your money. Get your extension. At first you'll get an "under consideration," stamp. Then they'll give you the remaining 11 months and you'll repeat this yearly.

Source- married to a Thai and do this yearly.

ยุถิกา โยธาประเสริฐ The OP mentions 800k so is doing a retirement Non-O not marriage so there will not be a 30 day under consideration stamp.

I would propose af Non-OA visa. It takes the same money plus a cheap health insurance from Thailand, criminal check, medical check. But you get 1 year upfront, multiple entry, dont need return ticket, and have 10 months to get a bank account and transfer money. After one year, you can go back to UK and get a Non-O if you want to get rid of the health insurance. I have done 5-6 Non-OA this year already.

Henrik JN Before the Non-OA expires, new insurance and a border bounce gets another 12 month entry stamp. The only reason to return to the UK would be to get a new Non-OA when this permitted to stay stamp is expiring as a Non-O visa can be obtained from countries neighbouring Thailand with a short stay there.

Graham Seal, true. Only reason to return to the UK is to get rid of the health insurance requirement if desirable.

Graham Seal, also a reason to go back to your home country is that it is more easy to show money in your home country.

Graham Seal, true also. But you have to get "out" of your Non-OA by leaving Thailand if you want to get rid of the health insurance requirement. Many ppl go back to their home country for summer holiday anyway.

Henrik JN Not true, a Non-O visa can be obtained from almost any Embassy no need to return "home"

I'm no expert but if you intention is to live in Thailand as a retiree then get a Non.O visa 1 year based on wanting to retire here, when pass though immigration here you will receive a 90 day stamp which gives you time to sort out what is required for the extension, my advice when here on the visa visit immigration and ask the questions. Do you speak Thai or any friends here that speak.

As far as the return flight goes I booked and paid extra for a flexible flight. You can then move this flight forward with no extra cost. Do the Non-O visa before you leave.

your luck maybe as it is but I've never had returned flights prebooked and been okay. apparently there are companies that will book you a return flight for a fee and you could also get a return flight fully refundable which would be quite expensive until you return it!

Newfarang 57 I've been with Bangkok bank 21 years never had a problem the reason people have problems with Bangkok bank is because they get thier non o visa via an agent and not through the correct channels or so I am led to belive

Graham Seal the people say its 'only 1900, do it yourself' are not first timers, they neglect to mention the documents you need to get, bank statements, GPS maps etc.

You get your Non-O visa before arriving. It gives you 90 days entry. Check what the bank needs to open bank account. Open account. Deposit money. Get 12 month extension.

Skip every reply that mentions "get an agent". Apply in the UK. Easy peasy provided you have the funds.

An agent can sort the paperwork out in a short period of time. You pay a fee for that. Nothing wrong

No

You need the First part of the Non-O from home first

For over 50 years of age 100% easier & cheaper to apply for a Suitable retirement Visa from your home country through the Thai Embassy website ( All done online )

When you are ready to come - Apply for a Non-O 90 day single Visa from the Thai Embassy in your home country about 30-45 days before departure.

When applying online you will need to show the required funds in any bank account , some personal details & Flight details & proof of first weeks accommodation .

Once approved & arrive in Thailand you have 90 days to organise for the 12 month extension

No.1 requirement is

Within 2 weeks of arrival You need to set up a Thai bank account & deposit 800K Baht , per person , for at least 60 days to satisfy the extension

Go to the bank of choice & ask them what they require to open a bank account

You can also come to Thailand on a tourist Visa & get it converted to a Non-O retirement Visa for a much higher cost

Bad plan. Apply for a 90 day Non-O visa based on being over 50 before you travel to Thailand. Once in Thailand go to open a bank account, for which you'll need a residence certificate from your local immigration office and a ThaiSIMregisteredagainstyourpassport, and deposit a minimum of 800k baht in your bank. Once it's been in the bank for 2 months you can apply for the 12 month extension of stay. Pick up the list of extension requirements while at immigration for the residence certificate.
