So looking into the requirements for applying for a thai dtv one that I have highlighted here states to have a 6 mo th rental agreement. Why would I sign up for a 6 month rental agreement before a dtv has even been approved? Has anyone had a problem with this requirement?

Answer summary
Applicants for the Thai Digital Tourist Visa (DTV) often express confusion regarding the requirement for a 6-month rental agreement before their visa is approved. Some expats have shared their experiences, noting that while certain embassies, like the one in Kuala Lumpur, may demand such documentation, it might not be a universal requirement. It is suggested that showing proof of long-term accommodation helps demonstrate the applicant's ability to stay legally and securely in Thailand. Alternatives, such as providing a reservation inquiry letter instead of a signed lease, have proven successful for some applicants.

Was in a similar situation. My guys were great and sorted out all the annoying details. And the price was solid. For a referral text me
It’s obvious, as you are applying for DTV AS A DEPENDENT you need to show evidence that you can stay in Thailand without working illegally or being homeless. Hence, the proof of long term accommodation.
When you apply via an agency, they care a lot about their reputation and cancellations hurt them through word of mouth. If it's money back guarantee package, immediate finance is at stake. That's why they give you a long list of requirements, some not even close to purpose of visa, then they apply with a big file. The trick is to give *embassy/ ambassador so much information that they have no reason to reject visa. It mostly works 😄
We had this requirement request after submitting the DTV application in KL. I just submitted a letter that has the details of the reservation inquiry I had made with the property and the total amount it would cost. And in the letter I explained that it's a big upfront cost to pay in advance and if I am not granted the DTV I will lose money. DTV was approved and entered the country with no issues.
I don't know the source but it is clearly written there that these are requirements for a spouse or children's visa of a DTV holder. That means there is already a DTV issued to one spouse (DTV holder).
Given your side information that no DTV has been issued so far, you are probably looking for the wrong Visa.
