Why does sending money to Thailand for a long-term stay take longer with Wise?

I use wise. Does anyone know why it takes a day or 2 to send money to my Thai bank account if I say the reason. (Funds for long term stay in Thailand).

Happens for any amount.

But when I send money to the girlfriend or for any other reason it's sent straight away.

Just curious.

Thanks everyone

TLDR : Answer Summary
Transferring money to a Thai bank account via Wise can take longer (1-2 days) when the reason for the transfer is stated as funds for a long-term stay. This is because Wise categorizes it as an international transfer which involves additional processing time, unlike transfers marked for other reasons, such as sending money to friends or family, which are processed as domestic transfers. Factors like timing of the transfer, payment method, and whether funds are already in the Wise account can also affect the transfer speed.
Stephen *********
Use common sense. Just say money is for family. Is that so hard?
David ******
It depends on what time of the day you deposit your money
Ed *****
Transfer by credit card, ach transfer from bank account? Both payment type may make a difference
Radek *******
I use Revolut, not Wise, and transfer to Bangkok bank IBAN, higher amounts, which will receive the funds immediately, according to Revolut, but not show it until later next day.

Transfers within Thailand are immediate.
Ray ********
Is it better and faster to have the funds in the Wise account or doing a bank to bank transfer . Thanks
Simon *********
I think it also depends if you already have the funds in your wise account, converted to thai baht, or if the funds are being taken from your bank account, into wise, then converted to thai baht and then sent...
Mike *******
I will transfer to my Thai bank account (BK bank) 65,000 baht from my Wise account tomorrow morning.The funds have been in Wise acc for several days. I usually transfer it from Wise at between

am. It ends up in my BK bank account at 2:20 pm the same day.

, unless it's a weekend or holiday. I always say for long term stay.
Jesper *******
I don't have problem using Wise to send myself 65k choosing the option for long term stay usually it arrives in the same day but after 2pm bkk time if I send it in the morning (before cutoff time) on a bank working day never send your funds on a weekend
Baz *********
I always choose personal expenses regardless of the reason and transfer goes through almost instantly...

In 15 seconds for 1 done a few days ago.

Sending money to your Thailand bank takes minutes.. Cannot use wise to send money back to my UK account..

I use remitly

I have done many wise and western union transfer from my country to a Thai bank account over last 6 years. It’s actually dependent on the day and time you sent based on my personal experience and not due to reason. If I send during office hour on a weekday it can arrive in seconds but if sent at night , can take one more day although I also encounter night transfer that is immediate. If there is a coming holiday or on a holiday itself on either country it could stretch too.

By the way I notice recently WU has a better rate than Wise especially when there is no fee promo period from WU, transfer is immediate as well although at the transaction page say up to a few days. Worthwhile to compare before you send.
Richard *******
@Fish *********
the day I looked at this , the WU rate was far lower than Wise and with fees , I ended up getting more money after conversion and fees with wise
Fish **********
It’s not all the time as mentioned. When there is no fee from WU, it seem lower for my case. Just wanted to bring the awareness to compare. Cheers !

My transfers using Wise, Aussie bank to Thai bank, usually take just seconds. Bank to bank.
Steve *****
When you give the reason to transfer put down travelling expenses it arrives within minutes

Is there a phone number I can call as I’m locked out after changing phone number and email addresses. Been trying for months online but a major headache 🤕
Colin ********
I do about 5000 per day
Colin ********
I get mine in minutes most days except on a, Monday, also 20,000+ seems, to take, longer
Andy *******
It varies from seconds to days, there's no logic to it so don't give yourself a migraine trying to figure it out. Many factors go into it that are Beyond you and I

I was just curious, not something I'll be losing sleep over.

But I did just find out I need it to show as an international transfer for my visa.

20 minutes ago I had no idea about that.
Andy *******
@Fred ********
but, a lot of factors go into that also, for instance, what local immigration office you use, there are about a hundred of them or if you do the process starting from your home country or use an Agent, etc., Don't try to make too much sense of the process for this country I've been in and out for 40 years, 4 permanent now, and I'll never understand it

@Andy ******
I'll not be doing that here, I'll wait till I go over.

Seems to be easier I think.

Anyway. Off to sleep. Late here.

Cheers

Just put for family. It will take about a minute
Kim *********
@Khamdee **************
can't use that when it has to show international transfer which is necessary if we talk about extension of stay - at least if we talk about non-o based on marriage or retirement and monthly transfers
J ******************
Transferred funds from Australia using long term stay nearly always goes through in seconds might want to check the method of payment you select .There are several options some say funds arrive in seconds some say as much as 3 days .Be careful when selecting payment method as the default method seems to change at times
Richard ******
@J *****************
I have found that it’s not the method of payment you use but when you send it. If sent early to mid week it’s usually instant but from Friday through the weekend it will take days. Just my experience and I always use the long term stay option.
Andy ************
Because the "funds for longstay" category must be shown as an international transfer, so Wise will intercept this transfer to ensure it is notated correctly. Mine is usually overnight, but can be up to two days
Brandon ************
For any other reason, Wise utilizes their funds they already have in Thailand and it shows up as a domestic transfer because they are transferring it from a Thai bank account to a Thai bank account.

When you choose long-term stay you are specifically telling Wise you want it to show up as an international transfer. Those take time.
Jonnie *******
@Brandon ***********
duration to arrive also depends on how much is sent, send 20,000thb it’ll arrive in seconds, send 450,000thb it can take a few days, this is certainly the case with my revolut account anyway
Gary ********
@Brandon ***********
I send it to my account in Thailand using my Recolute account. It's done in minutes yet my TSB can take a few hours. I only had a problem once when I lived in Dublin and it took several days.
Mark ********
@Brandon ***********
not true! I always put for long term stay in Thailand. Money shows up in seconds. It has more to do with the home country banks releasing the money funds.

Wise always seems to front me the money then it comes out of my USA account a few days later.
Michael *******
@Mark *******
yip same same, never more than 15-20 mins and I do 65k every month and tick long stay……we’re with SCB……..may depend on local bank
Andy *********
@Mark *******
not true ! My money is already in wise account but can take a day - nothing to do with home country bank
Willy *******
@Andy ********
I have also already money in Wise account.And if I label transfer as funds for long term stay it takes one day or at least hours to arrive. Other cases just seconds.
Mark ********
@Andy ********
How can they hold your money when it’s already in your Wise account. Bizarre.
Andy *********
@Mark *******
as my Thai bank account has been nominated by myself to show as an international transfer (FTT) for all transfers - if I send to other Thai accounts or for a different reason other than “long term stay in Thailand “ it can be instant - also the amount you send can also impact length of transfer to ensure no money laundering - it normally says in the transfer timeline that you hv been verified during transfer process - hope that helps 👍

I only send money that's actually in my wise account. And has been for days or weeks. Always takes a day or 2 to go through to my Thai bank account
Mark ********
@Fred ********
that’s even stranger that they don’t send your own money right away. You might want to contact them and ask why?
Fred *********

@Mark *******
It only happens if I say it's for long term stay.

If I say it's for expenses it goes straight through.

But I think now I know why. Brandon has explained

@Andy ***********
In the long term I'm guessing it doesn't make any difference what reason I say I'm sending cash.

I'm only sending for when I move over and it doesn't really matter how long it takes to get there.

But dies the reason make any difference in the long run
Jay *******
@Fred ********
look at your transactions on your banking app. Funds for long term stay will be listed as an international tranfer. Other than international stay and it shows as a local transaction using a local Thai bank.
Brandon ************
@Fred ********
The "long-term stay in Thailand" is specifically for people that want to use that money for a retirement visa. To apply for a non-O retirement visa in Thailand you must be able to show that the money came as an international transfer. And people that want to use the monthly transfer option for their 2nd year extension and beyond must be able to show the monthly transfer was an international transfer.
Fred *********

@Brandon ***********
I'm sending for when I move over. In about a year, roughly.

I'll be using the visa that needs the 800,000 baht in bank.

So I need to make sure I keep sending this way, as it shows up as international transfer.

Wonder why that matters, but if important then that's the way I'll keep sending
Andy ************
@Fred ********
The 65k/month transfer is in lieu of the 800k, and is the most cost-effective method, as the 65k you can use as soon as it hits your bank account. The 800k is effectively tied up for the rest of your life
Brandon ************
@Fred ********
if you get the visa at a Thai embassy before you move to Thailand, the annual extensions of 800,000 in the bank don't have that requirement. But if you want to keep all your options open then you'd want to continue
