If I come to Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa and then go to a neighboring country like Laos and return to Thailand does the original 60 day stamp still valid for Thailand or does it revert to the 30 or 45 day Visa exempt on arrival

TLDR : Answer Summary
When you leave Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa and return, the original visa is no longer valid. You will receive the standard 30-day visa exemption upon re-entry, or 45 days if you enter after October 1st. If you wish to extend your stay beyond this period, you can apply for an extension at a fee of 1900 baht.

You will get a

day exemption when you return. You can extend it for 30 days for 1900baht, so you’ll have more than your original 60 days anyway.

Without a re-entry stamp, all and any visas are void once you left Thailand. Easy, ey?
many places won't even sell a re-entry permit for tourist visa because there's no point. Especially starting October 1st when visa exempt goes to 45 days.
If you have a multi-entry tourist visa you can stamp out/in as many times as you like during the six validity period. However a single-entry, as has been pointed out, expires as soon as it is used.

The moment you stamped out of Thailand, your 60days visa is invalid. When you re-enter, you will be getting the normal 30days visa exempt before 1st October or 45days visa exempt after 1st October. Should you wish to stay for another 45days, then you can apply for it with a fee of 1900bahts as long you can provide a valid reason for the extension
Incorrect. Extensions are 30 days, and you give the reason as "tourism".

The replies here are correct. I was in this situation last month as I left to visit Vietnam for a week with about 5 days left on my 60 day visa. Upon return I got the usual 30 days visa exempt status.

Did immigration want to see any boarding or return tickets as well as your passport when you arrived back from Vietnam.
I am going to do the same before my 90 days are up, I will extend original return ticket to UK by 60 days.
This will exceed the 45 days I will get on visa exemption , but I intend to get an additional 30 days extension.
I am just concerned if they pick the difference up, in the number of days.
my plans are pretty much the same what makes it difficult is if you have to show a ticket out of Thailand within your visa period you would have to change your exit ticket out of Thailand three or more times
The exit and return ticket for Vietnam should suffice, it's the original UK return ticket when I return for the visa exempt stamp they may want to see.
Mine will exceed 45 days, for final return date to the UK

Your tourist stamp is used and invalid as soon as you enter Thailand. If you leave Thailand you lose whatever days you had left and would have to re-enter visa exempt if you don't purchase another tourist visa before entering.
