Why do I need to buy new travel insurance for Thailand after canceling my trip due to a travel ban?

We bought the compulsory Covid Insurance from the Official Thai Department for a visit last December. Two days before we were due to travel the Thai government isuued a travel ban so we could not fly. They have now opened the borders to welcome travellors, but require us to buy a new travel insurance from them?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user purchased compulsory Covid insurance from a company associated with the Thai government before a travel ban was implemented. Despite the reopening of borders, the user now faces requirements to purchase new travel insurance to comply with the Thailand Pass program. Comments from the community indicate confusion over the role of the government versus private companies in selling this insurance, and concerns about the adequacy of existing policies for meeting the new requirements.

Michelle Zaparaniuk it wasn’t travel insurance. It was Covid insurance that was a requirement by the Thai authorities in order to enter Thailand. We have our own travel medical cover.

and if you happen to be coming from one of those counteries then you are effectively banned. The irony is that the Omnicron virus was already established in many overseas counteries, but becuase of the stringent testing done in South Africa, it was their laborateries that correct identified it and made it public. Unfortunately becoming associated with the strain. Afterwards however being praised

I believe the MoPH issues a certificate confirming you have insurance, but the government does not sell actual policies.

Do you mean this? It's a consortium of private insurers that was formed at the request of the govt. I used it in Nov 2020. It still looks like it's active.

This is what we received last time. It is why I said it was a government department…….

“For yourself, we are trying our best to have the insurance company release a new policy for us (They are owned by the Thai government and they are very very slow...).”

Thank you for your response. When we purchased the Covid insurance for our travel last December we queried why it was taking so long. We were told that they were dealing with a government dept and had to wait for them.

The insurance was a requirement to enter Thailand. I thought tha because our trip was cancelled by restrictions placed on by the government and we had to cancel for that reason, that we could just change the dates when travel was allowed again

We have been dealing with MISTERPRAKAN

The only requirement was $50,000 USD in Covid coverage which is now $20,000 USD. If your existing policy met this requirement there was no need to purchase another policy. It is just a requirement for your policy to state this amount of Covid coverage specifically or receive a letter from your insurance stating so, then upload when applying for Thailand Pass. I stated it as "travel insurance" as this is what you called it...read the last sentence of your original post. I don't understand "Official Thai Department" you can buy this insurance from an insurance company in Thailand or elsewhere.

You should have cancelled your insurance at the time, to change to later date. Check with whomever you bought it off which wasnt the goverment.

Very few of the insurance suggestions that have been given on this forum will quote if you are over 69.

The broker that we are talking to will only sell a cover for $
*****
as their system has not been “adjusted” to sell the cheaper requirement. We will probably do that.

Important to understand that we have already got full medical insurance for travel and the only reason we have to buy additional is to meet a requirement for a Thailand Pass

Hi. Thanks for your response. Quite frustrating. We were packed and ready to fly when we heard about the travel ban. We tried unsuccessfully to contact Singapore airlines to find out if our flight was canceled. Apparently their systems crashed. All airports were closed so we couldn’t even go and enquire. We then canceled the insurance. We were only advised many days later that our flight had been canceled although the plane did leave, but without passengers

What official Thai Department sells covid insurance? Private companies sell that not government departments. There’s an official list of companies you can use but they are not a government department.

Maybe this one? Yes, it's composed of private insurers, but it was organized at the government's direction. I used it to enter in Nov 2020
