I just came across an app called "Moreta". They claim you can pay using the Thai QR system by just linking a US bank account or a Wise account, they convert USD to THB and charge 3% per transaction with the free plan or 1.5% with the paid plan ($10/month).
Has anyone tried it? Seems useful for emergencies, the other day I couldn't get my scooter out of the parking lot because they only accepted QR payment 😅 Thankfully a delivery guy helped me

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the Moreta app, which claims to enable users to make QR payments in Thailand linking a US or Wise bank account. Multiple commenters share their experiences, noting that Moreta works primarily for business accounts, and expressing concerns over its fees and the overall need for an established bank account in Thailand for more reliable transactions. Recommendations include considering local bank accounts and alternative payment options.
DeepPocket and Moreta are not long-term solutions; they’re no longer free, and their fees could suddenly spike higher when they decide to prioritize monetizing their business. Instead, consider visiting various bank branches during quieter working hours to explore opening a local Thai bank account. It’s achievable with some effort—be prepared to check multiple locations and even try different provinces.
A certificate of residence and copies of your passport/visa and 20,000THB in cash ready for deposit for account opening is a must before you even consider! Best of luck.

Thanks to Mr Alex Fortin management expertise, I received a $7,500 payment from a $1,000 investment. His guidance and support have been invaluable."👉
I use to pay electric as well as many shops. Have also used to pay rent as well to my landlord. But we do direct transfer from my other half’s bank account normally.

Get a standard banking app. As far as I know: you can register an credit card with it (no need for a bank account). - no idea how much that would cost, but a 3% fee is absurd expensive.
I didn’t know this, I’ll check it out. Yes 3% is expensive

Yes I used Moreta. Unfortunately it only worked for business QR codes and not individuals. I took my money out and transferred to Pay&Tour through Kbank but it’s mostly a similar situation.

Just get a proper bank account, if you have a serious reason for getting one you’re getting it for sure
Of course foreigners can get a bank account but you need a non-immigrant visa and because DTV is a tourist visa, you will find it difficult getting a local bank account.
why should u use an agent if you can open an account at the branch directly ? Just go to main branches and give them a proper reason to open your account. E.g. in case you go to Thailand for medical reasons you can even open with visa exempt
That would be OK I think, I cannot expect non bussiness cannot be paid cash and with 3 percent extra charged it is even cheaper to pay high ATM fees if you have no other option.
But in the situation of the opening post when you can only pay by QR it might be handy.
this is correct, it's business only. And in many cases, smaller merchants like street vendors may be using personal rather than business accounts, so this could impact you more than that sounds. I know a lot of the smaller places around here that use QR, it's a personal name and not a business.
