QR Payment without a bank account

I just came across an app called "Moreta". They claim you can pay using the Thai QR system by just linking a US bank account or a Wise account, they convert USD to THB and charge 3% per transaction with the free plan or 1.5% with the paid plan ($10/month).

Has anyone tried it? Seems useful for emergencies, the other day I couldn't get my scooter out of the parking lot because they only accepted QR payment 😅 Thankfully a delivery guy helped me

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the Moreta app, which claims to enable users to make QR payments in Thailand linking a US or Wise bank account. Multiple commenters share their experiences, noting that Moreta works primarily for business accounts, and expressing concerns over its fees and the overall need for an established bank account in Thailand for more reliable transactions. Recommendations include considering local bank accounts and alternative payment options.

DeepPocket and Moreta are not long-term solutions; they’re no longer free, and their fees could suddenly spike higher when they decide to prioritize monetizing their business. Instead, consider visiting various bank branches during quieter working hours to explore opening a local Thai bank account. It’s achievable with some effort—be prepared to check multiple locations and even try different provinces.

A certificate of residence and copies of your passport/visa and 20,000THB in cash ready for deposit for account opening is a must before you even consider! Best of luck.

Thanks to Mr Alex Fortin management expertise, I received a $7,500 payment from a $1,000 investment. His guidance and support have been invaluable."👉

I use True Money for many things, can load in 7-11 or for me I simply transfer to my other half and she loads for me through her bank.

@Kevin *******

I use to pay electric as well as many shops. Have also used to pay rent as well to my landlord. But we do direct transfer from my other half’s bank account normally.

Get a standard banking app. As far as I know: you can register an credit card with it (no need for a bank account). - no idea how much that would cost, but a 3% fee is absurd expensive.

3% from 1000 is 30 ... just saying.

I didn’t know this, I’ll check it out. Yes 3% is expensive

Yes I used Moreta. Unfortunately it only worked for business QR codes and not individuals. I took my money out and transferred to Pay&Tour through Kbank but it’s mostly a similar situation.

Just get a proper bank account, if you have a serious reason for getting one you’re getting it for sure

@Kai ********
foreign cant get thai bank account now. So maybe dont talk about stuff you dont know about
Daniel ********
@Kurt ************
Of course foreigners can get a bank account but you need a non-immigrant visa and because DTV is a tourist visa, you will find it difficult getting a local bank account.
Kurt *************
@Daniel *******
this group is about dtv visa. So thats also why everyone is saying no bank accounts right now. So advice is just bad

I didn’t have issues but can only talk for myself

@Kurt ************
I was able to open recently. It’s also bs you cannot open. It’s just not possible without a reason.

@Kai ********
so maybe you where VERY lucky with the recent reports that nobody can and slot of accounts beeing closed down
Jeremy *****
Kai Jürgenson when did you open it ?

Prior to the 17th I'd bet

As of the 17th it's not so easy as even agents can't 😂
Kai *********
@Jeremy ****
why should u use an agent if you can open an account at the branch directly ? Just go to main branches and give them a proper reason to open your account. E.g. in case you go to Thailand for medical reasons you can even open with visa exempt
Jeremy *****
@Kai ********
okie dokie again rules changed last week do I have to repeat myself yet again

And I didn't say use an agent i said even they can't open them for anyone right now

Again read 🙄

A user posted the Moreta will only scan business accounts and not individual accounts
Luit *****************
@Ian *********
That would be OK I think, I cannot expect non bussiness cannot be paid cash and with 3 percent extra charged it is even cheaper to pay high ATM fees if you have no other option.

But in the situation of the opening post when you can only pay by QR it might be handy.
Barry ******
Plebqr.com is another option. Scans any qr codes
Daniel ********
@Barry *****
it works only if you hold bitcoin.
Barry ******
That's not a big deal. You buy a little bit and you use it to scan qr codes.

Or find someone with cash and a Thai bank account and they essentially become a walking ATM
Ivan ************
@I**
this is correct, it's business only. And in many cases, smaller merchants like street vendors may be using personal rather than business accounts, so this could impact you more than that sounds. I know a lot of the smaller places around here that use QR, it's a personal name and not a business.

The DeepPocket app lets you scan and pay for a 399/month subscription.

Their customer support says it works and you can scan and pay anyone, but they're app says that foreigners aren't allowed to scan and pay individuals.
Bernardo *************
@Steve ******
aint true. I was able to scan someone else’s qr code for payment/transfer.
Steve *******
@Bernardo ************
what "ain't true"?
Bernardo *************
@Steve ******
that foreigners are not allowed to scan and pay people.
Steve *******
@Bernardo ************
that's what their app says. But their customer support says otherwise. Which was my entire comment.

Did you send money to an individual person or a business?

Next time, go to the information kiosk and pay for your parking ticket in cash.

haha no it isn’t, you knob jockey.

People here are having trouble getting bank accounts which they want for the very reason Carlos has mentioned.

What kind of arrogant tool thinks he can just make an off the cuff comment on someone’s reasonable and thought out post? haha.
