TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation revolves around various banking apps used by expats in Thailand for daily transactions. Users mention apps like 'Wise,' 'Bangkok Bank,' 'Krungthai NEXT,' 'Revolut,' and 'TrueMoney.' There is a debate about the convenience of cash versus digital payments, with some individuals preferring to use cash for transactions, while others advocate for digital solutions like QR code payments. The summary reflects differing attitudes on the necessity of having a Thai bank account, with some expats arguing that having one significantly eases transactions, while others maintain that cash is sufficient for their needs.

Truemoney… but rarely… why would i need „day to day transactions“? cash is king. and i rather have my money in my home bank account. just use the ATM (30k baht per transaction)… i also use Revolut for topping up my AIS account or paying for BEIN sports for example.

there will still be cash for a few more years .But who will choose to use money passing round germs certainly not me. Only criminals while it last !

cash is king 🤣. Digital bhat on its way very soon . Everyone will be using digital wallets (QR codes) scan and pay for everything!! 2025 now the world is advancing people need to get used to what coming very fast

not in thailand. many years away from pure digital payment for tourists and expats. first you would need a working system for that and not the trash that is available right now

Cash is king? Well, in Thailand, most transactions are done using QR codes these days. I wouldn't want to be carrying cash on me everytime I need to go somewhere. However, I always have my phone with me, like most people here. Having a bank account is so much more convenient, and even if you can certainly survive without one, I wouldn't want to stay here for years with cash only for every transaction. But I'm glad it's apparently not a problem for you.

There are a few guys in this group that for some reason has made it their mission to convince people that there is no benefit what so ever to have a thai bank account when you stay several years in Thailand.

@Nick *****
think this a matter of preference.

In Markets and street food I use cash

Grab or Bolt credit card

Grocery stores or Tops credit card

Grab delivery credit card.

Larger restaurants credit card.

So, for me I’m using Apple Pay with my phone or a card.

Plus my bank charges me zero fees to do ATM withdrawal. For me 5000 baht cash is plenty per month.

Oh forgot massage 200 baht plus tip

I pay cash

Anonym deltagare 517 Or you can just just your thai bank account and scan for all of those things. 7-11 is the only place you can’t do that.

first you need to differentiate locals and foreigners. especially tourists like DTV holders. locals use QR a lot, okay. tourists will allmost allways carry cash and you can pay everywhere with it. you dont need a bank account as a tourist and banks rightfully stopped opening accounts for those. thailand is very safe, so it is no problem to carry a few thausand baht every day. i am in thailand for years without a bank account. never need one, never want one. for what? i take 30k multiple times per month from the atm. pay cash almost everything. not a single issue with that. it is barely more expensive than using wise and a local account… if i really want to QR scan then i just use TrueMoney. so that makes a bank account even more useless for me… it is not a problem for most people staying in thailand… but sure, everyone is different. i guess the people that NEED bank account just dont know how easy it is without one. 😅

I agree cash is king, I hate the money digitalisation. Thailand was liberated from that and I chosed to make it my bastion where I take my last stand, but now Thailand followed the western system and I fear that soon it will become like my home country Sweden where you basically can’t use cash at all anywhere, I already encountered some shops here like Dairy Queen that won’t accept cash. Any shop that won’t accept cash is a shop I refuse to be customer in 💸

cash is king ? That's crap statement from someone who can't open a bank account 😭 if you are coming in short term holiday maybe but not for living here permanent. QR and pay everything online must easier, convienent and quick. Pay anything online most only accept transfer not cash. But hey rookie mistake you'll get there 🤣🤣🤣

@David *******
I lived here permanently for 16 years and have both kasikorn, SCB and Bangkok bank you imbecile 😂

Cash is king always and I order stuff online both privately and for my business and 90% of it I pay cash on delivery for. I have both property and Thai wife, you’re the rookie that don’t know that cash is king 😂
David ********
@Jay *****
🤣🤣🤣🤣 you know all farang are easy to wind up keep living in your bubble let your wife do everything for you

100% agree… i would also avoid such places and let them know 😅 „not want my cash? okay byeee“ 🤣 but i guess all places that want the juicy tourist money will accept cash for many more years. we are still far far away from tourists using digital solutions. especially with the recent crackdowns on bank accounts, etc.. it is not getting easier, quite the opposite actually… they need to implement a system where you can top up with a foreign account or credit card. or they need to accept credit cards everywhere but without the current 1-3% vendor fee… not happening anytime soon.

i also find it funny when people tell

you that QR payment is soooo much faster. in reality it often takes longer. when Ploy tries to use her old & cheap smartphone and the app does not open, phone crash, internet not paid or slow, whatever…. i am allways faster handing over the 30 baht in cash for my mangoes at the market 🤣🤣
Jay ******
@Dany *******
exactly, nothing is faster and less traceable than cash. I just wait for the day/days when the internet is down and no shop can sell anything because they rely on everyone using digital payments 😂 and the digital sheeps can’t buy anything either 😂
David ********
@Dany *******
firstly you need to differentiate between tourists and those that actually live here regardless of visa status. Cash is not king just because you don't have a bank account this is the way you answer. It's up to the individual but it's fat easier with a Thai bank account it opens fat more opportunities not only to pay but also save money.it is also far more secure than cash,you can also track your spending and paying by QR you always have a receipt of purchase. But if your happy keep loving life as you are
Dany ********
@David *******
surely everyone has a different life, needs, etc.. so ofc my opinion is based on my experience living the everyday life in this country. i have not seen a situation where a thai bank would be really beneficial in my personal life. nothing would have been easier for ME. so i agree, it is highly subjective.

saving money in a thai bank account would be stupid as there is little to zero interest rates on the money. it would allways be a lot better to save in a western bank account, or preferably in some investment. even if its just an ETF that yields 5-10% annualy.

no security issues in thailand. i mean it is safer than most western countries. (for a foreigner)… sure it is more safe to pay digitally but it is a very small factor.

yes tracking spendings might be slightly easier. i just did a few months of tracking on google spreadsheets to learn about the real cost of living. but tbh, with a decent salary for remote work i dont count every single baht. when 30k (from an ATM transaction) are done i just go and get another 30k 🤷‍♀️ not on a budget but not on a luxury lifestyle either.

many many foreigners also have a thai gf/wife. they automatically come with X bank accounts 🤣🙈
David ********
@Dany *******
Thai bank is not a savings account it a transactional account. Of course you are better off saving or investing in yours or other countries even stock market in other countries. That's not why you have a Thai bank account.
Dany ********
@David *******
but you said that it is also for saving money in the account 😅 that is why i replied to that argument.
David ********
@Dany *******
no why would l save money in Thailand are you crazy. It's for receiving money into and using cashless payments,buying online,booking tickets,accomodation anything actually l rarely use cash. I never said savings l said save money usually if you scan you get locals rates also no tip just pay and go that's how you save
Nick ******
@Dany *******
I didn't have one during my initial 2 years in the country and it was a pain, in my opinion. Having one later made everything just much easier and smoother. But of course, everyone has different needs.
