Does DTV activate immediately after it's issued, or upon entering Thailand?

(So, can I apply for DTV 3 months before I travel?)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Digital Tourist Visa (DTV) activates on the date it is issued, and its validity allows for entry into Thailand at any time during its validity period, which is five years with individual entries valid for 180 days. While one can apply for the DTV months in advance, doing so may risk application rejection if applied too close to the estimated arrival. The visa does not require activation upon entry; it merely starts counting down the 180 days from the day of entry into Thailand.

Its valid from the date of issue. No activation required. 180 days starts the day you enter TH.

It activates or starts the timer from date of issue. At the bottom of your DTV page it tells you the start and end date.

It is valid once issued until it's expiry date, it is active once you use it to enter, doing it too far ahead risks it being cancelled and wastes your time.

KindMango4098 There is no activation.

Its active and valid from the day you are approved.

Applying for it too far ahead of initial estimated arrival just risks the rejection of the visa application altogether.

KindMango4098 applying too early doesn't cancel an already approved visa. But embassies can dent the application and ask them to apply again later.

KindMango4098 No, they don't cancel a visa for not being used.

But applying too early is just a waste, since you're losing time on the visa.

The 5 year validity (180 days each entry) commences on the day your DTV is issued. You can enter anytime you wish after it is issued. Mine was issued in May, 2025 and I entered for the first time in March, 2026.

SereneZebra9074 thanks for the intel. So you basically cut yourself short for the 10 months, am I right?

If your DTV was issued in May 2025, then it is valid until May 2030. (Not until March 31 as you entered in March 26), is that right?

Yes, was a decision made after Songkran 2025. Didn’t mind as I wanted to get it before any changes to the law or scrapping of the DTV altogether (Thailand can be unpredictable like that). 😊😊

it needs to be a cross-border bus or train that leaves the country, can't be just to the border. Options at the moment would be Laos or Malaysia. Worth bearing in mind the bus doesn't have to leave from Bangkok, so a bus Udon Thani - Vientiane would be acceptable, as long as the ticket actually crosses the border.
