TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on the appropriate visa for their father, who is traveling to Thailand for knee surgery. The comments suggest applying for a 60-day tourist visa, which can be extended for an additional 30 days if necessary. There's also mention of consulting with the Royal Thai Embassy for a medical visa option. Additionally, the discussion touches on the importance of understanding hospital costs and potential additional expenditures in case of complications during the surgery.

Just make sure you know the worst case scenario. The quote you get does not cover extras, or if something goes wrong. After that, everything is on top, if something does go wrong it can end up far more expensive than you would think. European private hospitals won't kick you out. Thai hospitals will, if the cash is not there.

I don't know what happens if it goes wrong in Oz, but in Thailand, if you need drugs over and above what should be routine, everything has to be paid for on top, even antibiotics if an infection takes hold. I believe they quote on the basis of everything going to plan. Of course that is wishful thinking.

For simplicity, a 60 day tourist visa followed by 30 day extension should be enough

Go online to thai Sydney consulate and look at the TR60 tourist visa and it can be extended for 30 additional days at immigration office in Thailand

The hospital may be able to assist him for a special visa... and/or he can consider the visa for medical reasons

Please enquire at the Royal Thai Embassy in the country of citizenship.

Or better / easier to just apply for a 60 day tourist, which can be extended once adding another 30 days. After that, usually one must leave; so not sure if hospital can have a say in his extending without leaving LOS...

I hope they're both not getting surgery...

all the best,

Cheers
