Hi there! I’m coming from the US and wanted to ask a quick question for a non b visa. In the application we need a criminal background check. I’ve gotten one from my local police department, but I was told I needed an FBI clearance background check. Does anyone know which I need or which is preferred? Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post inquires about the necessity of an FBI clearance versus a local police background check for a Non-B visa application in Thailand. Community members share differing experiences: while some have successfully used local checks, others recommend the FBI option as it is generally preferred by embassies. It's also noted that requirements can vary based on the specific Thai consulate involved in the application process.

Hello Liz, your criminal record check MUST be at the federal level (the FBI), most embassies will not accept a state or local police report. If you go to the FBI's website they list a bunch of 3rd party providers that can do the record check for you. As David said, if you do if through the FBI you'll be waiting anywhere from 3-30 weeks for it.

The BIG thing is WHAT thai consulate in what country are you thinking you're going to apply for the Non-B visa at :O

IF you're comin' here and going to go to the thai consulate in say Penang Malaysia to get the Non-B visa you need a police check from your country AND from thailand.

IF you're getting the visa in the US from one of the thai consulates there you just need a background check from your state.

IF you're already IN thailand you get a background check from the Police Special Branch Office in Bangkok, here;

I do not believe this clearance is relative to non-crimes in your home country. Imagine a guy from Nigeria or Kuwait or Papua New Guinea. Are they going to check the record in his/her country? For 100B? Impossible.

Punch a few numbers and call Thai Embassy or make an appointment. What kind of question is that for international community? Every country has its unit to issue the non criminal records. Conversely, if you are in Thailand, your Embassy should request for the non criminal record.

you can't get a criminal record check at the US embassy here in Bangkok.. You get it from the state you're from BEFORE you come here OR you get it from the special branch police office here in thailand

You "should" be ok with a local police check, but a state police records check would be better. National check can also be done (non-FBI) by a couple authorized companies in each state, or an FBI check. All four levels have made it through the visa process but maybe not guaranteed at the lowest levels. I got paperwork for the "national" level check to be on the safe side.

In certain jobs in Thailand you need to have a criminal background check. It was law for teachers to obtain said check after 3 of the top 10 most wanted list by Interpol were found to be working in Thailand with work permits as English teachers a number of years ago.

The last time I applied for a Thai visa in the US that required a criminal background check the Embassy would not accept a local one but did accept one from the state police.

The rules change. I got in with clearance from my local police...a written letter. As if you could be wanted by the FBI and the locals not know about it? But the Thai people may not know how our country works. So let us know how hard it is to get FBI background checks

I'm applying for mine right now and for the UK, I've had to go to the Criminal Records Office which is national police - not sure about the US, but on the logic I've had to get a national police check, you would have to go higher up than local police I'd imagine

They will ask you if you have ever been arrested (yes they often ask these in forms). If you lie, you may get your whole application thrown out.

That's why most Malaysians try to obey the law. Cos if you have been arrested, you have to declare it often

Yes, yes, I have been arrested many times in the USA.

No felonies, but I guess quantity matters?

No worries, I am not giving a Thai Bank 800k anyway.
