What steps should I take after my work permit is terminated and I need to manage my visa situation in Thailand?

I am on an extension of stay with a work permit. My employer wants to terminate my employment and has given me until June 14th to sort things out. I have been in Koh Phangan and have my TM 30 registered there, but a since my extension and work permit were issued in Chiang Mai, I was told I have to return to Chiang Mai in order to get those cancelled. I am on my way back to Chiang Mai now, but would like to return to KP as soon as possible, so I have some questions about if/how that would be possible...1) How long after my current extension of stay is cancelled will I have to apply for the new extension? 2) If I have to apply right away (from CM), will I need to register a new TM30 in Chiang Mai? 3) If I receive the “under consideration” stamp for the Covid extension in CM, will I have to return to CM immigration for the final stamp, or could I get it in KP? 4) If I get the final stamp for the Covid extension in CM and I want to apply for another Covid extension or a new visa in the future, will I have to return to CM again or could I apply for the new visa/extension from KP? I’m sorry for such a long post. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is facing a transition after their employer plans to terminate their work, leading to several questions about visa management and immigration procedures in Thailand. Key concerns include the timing for applying for a new extension after cancellation, the necessity of TM30 registration depending on location, as well as the process tied to receiving a Covid extension stamp and its implications for future visa applications.

Heads up for anyone reading this in a similar situation—Chiang Mai immigration now requires a TM.30 as well for the Covid extension

I don't think you are required to show up at the employment office to cancel the work permit, you can ask the previous employer to do it and send a scanned copy of it, thats all

The work permit belongs to the employee, and it's the employee's responsibility to confirm the work permit is cancelled. The employee, can allow the employer to cancel the work permit, but the employee must trust the employer.

yeah, thats what I meant...in many cases the employer can cancel the work permit, particularly if the employee has moved to another city and is unable to cancel it in person.

Whether you'll need a TM30 in Chiang Mai to file for a 60 day covid extension I don't know (post on a C/M f/b group and ask).

If you apply for a covid extension in C/M and get an under consideration stamp you would have to go back to that same office and 'close the loop', in fact they have you sign a paper that says you can come back in 14 days or you can't even get a covid extension from them up there.

Once you get the final extension stamp and want another extension (if they're still available) you can apply anywhere you want as long as you meet the requirements at that office

I did not. I just switched to the covid extension last week (from a Non-B w/ work permit) and all they needed for the covid visa is a copy of all pages of your passport with a thai visa stamp, first and last page, and a passport sized picture.

This is in CM

did you get the extension stamp or under consider stamp?

under consideration. Have to go back later this week.

They make you write a sentence saying I will be back in 14 days to get the stamp. Maybe when they ask you to write that sentence you can tell them is it possible to not do this?

and

if you can't go back in 14 days to close the loop on the under consideration stamp they don't SELL you the covid extension

Got it. Thank you both!! 🙏

As a rule you apply for a new extension right after you cancel your existing extension

BUT it totally depends on what the paperwork says, if they have your last day of work on the paperwork as June 14th and you go to cancel the extension early the immigration office will stamp you in until that date AND then you could go back to Koh Phangan and apply for the covid extension there (after you re-filed a TM30 showing you're back there)
