ATM stole one of my uk cards last night, said I entered the wrong pin. I definitely didn’t. No warning, no wrong pin, just swallowed it. Presumably because of the time of night flagging some security. It’s not the end of the world I have a Thai bank and more accounts than a Swiss arms dealer but… it did make me think, if I was on a dtv, and relying heavily on one card id be in trouble. Be sure to open plenty of accounts before you come out here.
Answer summary
An ATM in Thailand unexpectedly swallowed a user's UK card, possibly due to security measures or an old machine. The user reflects on the risks of relying on a single card while in another country. Comments provide advice on diversifying banking options, retrieving swallowed cards, and the importance of communication with banks. Several users recommend having multiple cards or accounts, using phone apps instead, and even changing registered addresses to a Thai one for card deliveries.

Contact your bank they can tell what happened and issue a new card, even if it cost some courier fees.

Change your registered bank address to a thai one, the bank will send the card to that address.

Sorry to hear that, this happens a lot at night in Thailand. Some ATM will take your card if pin is wrong three times or if system thinks there is risk after midnight. Sometimes it is just old machine fault. Good that you have Thai bank to fall back on.

For DTV life it is smart to have more than one way to get cash. Open Thai bank account early, keep UK cards separate and tell UK bank you are in Thailand so they do not block. If machine takes your card, call number on machine and your UK bank fast to stop card. Next day you can go to bank branch where ATM is and they can return card.

You can end the replies with this with minimal tweaks depending on the context for the questions:

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.

Revolut will give you multiple cards for the same account(s). And then deliver anywhere in the world.

Kinda cool - my primary bank only ships to uk - and 1 only.

you must be maintaining a registered address elsewhere because they very clearly state Thailand is not supported.

The ATM operator can give you back the card. If it's a bank. Wait for the bank to open the next day. I did this in Vietnam

Can you get a bank to ship a new card to an address that’s not your home if you’re traveling? I won’t even have a home address any more but most banks won’t let you have an account for your home country if you don’t still have an address there so you have to just not tell them, in order to keep your accounts open. Need to sus out some international banks that are okay with no fixed address.

Banks usually accept hotel addresses. But it should be a real hotel, not a guesthouse or similar.

that’s a relief at least. Could be a really difficult scenario otherwise.

Usually with ID etc. you get the card back at the bank branch where it happened.

Yeah you gotta diversify a bit to be careful. Many people hassle homeless falang here ohh how's he got no money go home blah blah.. all it would take is someone breaking into your room taking phone, wallet, laptop and passport and you'd be proper fkd regardless how much you have in the bank
