I'm in the USA but going to Thailand on Sep 4 and want to get the 6 month METV. The application asks how long I plan to stay in Thailand. To maximize my chances of getting approved, is it best to say 6 months, or should I say some other length of time?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user planning to apply for a 6-month Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) for Thailand seeks advice on how to answer the question about intended stay duration on the application. Comments suggest that specifying a set return date can improve approval chances, and it's important to mention onward travel plans. Travelers should be aware that with the METV, they need to leave and re-enter the country approximately every 60 days, which creates a scenario of needing onward tickets. Some suggest purchasing inexpensive bus or plane tickets for this purpose. Ultimately, it's crucial to comply with Thai immigration policies to avoid complications.

Getting my METV from the UK I had to provide proof of onward travel within 6 months. I purchased an international ticket just shy of the 6 months mark. In hindsight I would now purchase a ticket that returned me to Thailand the day before the 'exit before' date on my visa (the date 6 months after issue) which would then have granted me a new 60 day stamp on entering.

Just re-enter before the 'exit before date' you'll be stamped in for another 60 days.

get an onward ticket for $10 or $20.

I deleted my previous post because as in this day and age you have people that think it is OK to throw stupid comments to people they have never even met or doubt they would say to there face if they did. My point was in the wider sense is that 12 % of Thailands economy depends on tourism. If it is the OPs first METV then they have no right ( and as long as you are polite) to even know what your plans are over the duration of the visa. The very reason why METV replaced the original 6 month visa in the first place. However if you have many back to back visas then sure of course they should ask. And always comply with the 20.000 bht if requested. When I used to use a tourist visa I was asked by immigration at the airport the same thing and given the very same polite answer. The whole crack down if there is one is about people working in Thailand when they are supposed to be tourists. Genuine tourists have nothing to fear or worry about. Many using the METV including many of my friends have no plans which was the point of offering such a flexible visa in the first place.

shot. Sometimes they don't check. Sometimes they don't require it. But many have policies about it. Often those policies are visa or visa requirement related and nothing to do with round trip or onward travel - other than its required for the visa.

. Flying on a one way ticket is nothing to do with the thai consulate or thai immigration. Its the airline you can have problems with. Many of them wont let you fly with only a one way ticket, especially from the UK, I dont know about from the US.

I applied my METV in my home country which is not US, I wrote the number of days that I planed to stay in Thailand, which is less than 60 days because we have booked a onward ticket to other country. I just think that if I enter Thailand I can only get the 60 days stamp so it wouldn't make any sense to put more than 60 days...

It's their country -- I think it is their business.

They care about 'onward travel'. In the past I have bought bus tickets and plane tickets within 60 days of my arrival date. Bus ticket $20 plane $30. Who knows you may want to go to KL for the weekend - and not waste the money. I believe with the METV you will still need to leave the country every 60+30 days (60 days original entry + 30 days extension). The extension costs $40 so it's damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-don't scenario. I think the shortest bus ride from BKK to outside of Thailand is probably 8 hours, though I am not sure. The bus is fun one time -- not something to repeat.

If you want maxmize you chances, you have set date for return. If you start talking about flexbility means that lead to thinkpattern that maby you do not want to return.
