TLDR : Answer Summary
Transferring your DTV (Direct Transfer Visa) to a new passport can be straightforward. It's recommended to check the Thai Embassy or Immigration website for guidance. Several users have shared their experiences, noting that the process can be quick, such as one individual who completed the transfer at Sisaket immigration in just 20 minutes and at no cost. If you're traveling while the DTV is in your old passport, it's generally acceptable to show both the old and new passports to immigration officers.

They stamped my passport with my visa information and stapled the last 90 day report

I have just come back from Vietnam yesterday and now have a new 180 day stamp which n my new passport

No need to cart old passports around

Never heard immigration doing this for visas issued abroad. For in country extensions, yes.
