What should I do if my Thai Visa application was rejected and issued a Tourist Visa instead?

DTV Soft Power (6mo cooking class program) via Jakarta embassy - issued a 60 day Multi-entry Tourist Visa instead.

Very disappointing, and a waste of money, but from what I see here, not that uncommon. The embassy did not like that I submitted a brokerage statement as proof of funds instead of a Bank Statement. If trying again, I will definitely move funds to a regular bank account and hold them there for at least 3 months.

Suggestions for a more lenient embassy? Preferably in SEA.

Correction: the duration of the issued visa is 6 months, not 60 days. Apologies for confusion.
Answer summary
The original poster applied for a DTV Soft Power cooking class program but received a Multi-entry Tourist Visa instead, mainly due to the embassy's issues with the proof of funds provided (a brokerage statement instead of a bank statement). They expressed disappointment but acknowledged that this situation is not uncommon. Suggestions from commenters included moving funds to a regular bank account before reapplying, providing a cover letter to explain plans in Thailand, and tips on which embassies (Vietnam and Laos) might be more lenient. Furthermore, advice was given regarding acceptable proof of funds, highlighting the need for liquid cash assets rather than investments.

Said over and over that borage statement wouldn’t work. You can’t apply again until the tourist visa expires

At least they gave you a correct visa so you can complete your 6 months of school.

If I remember correctly the website says liquid assets only or fixed incomes okay if they can be withdrawn immediately. Meaning no stocks, Crypto that loses/gains value, etc.

As for Embassies, I’ve heard Vietnam & Laos were good for applying to the DTV program. Laos may require an Interview but Hanoi doesn’t seem to require one. I didn’t do one from the D.C. Embassy so can’t say for sure who gets singled out for these.

For reference, I gave 6 months savings & checking statements with all important account information blacked out properly & got approved immediately. Good luck!

Thank you! Just for the record, the statement showed the required amount in cash.

Did you include a cover letter explaining what you plan to do in Thailand in addition to the course, and after the course is completed?

Anonymous participant 237 I have upon the embassy's request. They asked for proof of "prior cooking experience". I attended a 1 day class some time ago in Bangkok, so I described that, named the school, and attached some pictures of me taking that class. I also mentioned my interest in Buddhism, attached some pictures from a spiritual retreat in Thailand I attended, and noted I am interested in Vipassana retreats after the class.

Not sure how strong (or not) of a letter it was, but must have been okay enough to not get a full denial.

There have been previous reports of Embassies asking the applicant if they would accept a 6 months Multiple Entry Tourist Visa instead of a DTV and also refunding the 50% cost difference. Did Jakarta do either or both with you?

OP
I was not asked. There were two requests for documents, asking me to upload a bank statement instead of the brokerage statement.

The first time they asked for the bank statement and to highlight relevant parts of the document. I resubmitted the same brokerage statements, but with amounts and dates highlighted to prove I have the necessary funds in cash.

The second time they strictly stated it must be a bank statement. I uploaded a polite letter explaining why I keep the money in the brokerage account instead of a bank account and that while I could move it, it would incur costs on my side and I would not be able to provide 3 months worth of statements since the transfer would be right now. After that the process moved to "Pending Approval".

You also made me realize the TR visa is for 6 months, not 60 days. I will correct the OP. That suggests the problem wasn't really the funds or the statement, but the duration of the cooking course (6 months).

Anonymous participant I will say it’s the brokerage account that’s the issue as I got my cooking classes approved for the DTV & it’s 6 months. The wording says liquid cash assets & no investment or cryptocurrency accounts. Good luck either way.

Anonymous participant I just reviewed the documents I submitted & that wasn’t required or asked for from the D.C. Embassy. Because I’m doing the soft power route, the requirements are a little different from the workcation route.

Honestly if you show 3-6 months of savings in liquid cash I haven’t seen anything that says a paystub would be needed for the soft power route. Maybe try Hanoi or Vientiane in Laos.

I used 6 months of Navy Federal, USAA, & my Apple Savings to show I have way more than needed to support myself. Blacked out all important account information besides name. I only submitted the month end statements & worked just fine. NFCU savings only report every 2 months so I made sure my documents lined up accordingly. Merge into 1 PDF. (Size matters for each document upload)

Hmm, thanks for that. I will move sufficient funds to a bank account and keep it there for a while for the next attempt once this visa expires. May I ask, did you show proof of income as well? The embassy asked me, but my income is not great, just some interest (I am in the middle of a "mid career break", so to speak)

There was a verifiable report (name was stated). I was amazed. I’ll see if I can find it.

Brokerage accounts are only accepted at a few embassies primarily in America. Disappointing but luckily you got a al TV and not a total cancellation/rejection. Your METV gives you around 8mths to season a bank account to apply again. Vietnam, Laos, Manilla are good SEA options.

that's true. My initial disappointment was mostly due to misreading the visa I've got. I was convinced it was 60 days, so that felt like paying a full DTV fee to get the same terms as visa on arrival. I now realize it's 6 months, which is okay to attend the class I paid for and try again. Thanks for embassy suggestions.

Anonymous participant Time your final arrival correctly you can get 8mths from the METV. Completing the course with strengthen your next application, others have been in your situation and got the DTV 2nd time around.

Anonymous participant Ah ok, you don't have the regular METV. It will be around for longer than the next 6mths so you will be fine.

unfortunately visa's validity is specified not as "6 months since arrival" but up to a fixed date (the last day of the course).

You make a good point regarding the strength of the next application. Hopefully the DTV will be still around and kicking.
