What should I do if my Lufthansa flight from Bangkok is cancelled on the last day of my visa?

Jul 26, 2022
2 years ago
Waiting in hotel before going to the airport, in Bangkok, to fly back to Spain. Lufthansa has just informed me that the flight is cancelled.

What a pickle, today is the last day of my visa so I will be on visa overstay and whatever that entails.

I am in a complete quandary, completely left in limbo.

Hopefully as it is an EU company I will get something sorted.

Anyone had any experience?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler in Bangkok experienced a cancelled flight by Lufthansa on the last day of their visa, raising concerns about overstaying. Commenters advised contacting Lufthansa for alternate flights and compensation, suggesting visiting the airline's desk at the airport. Others mentioned that one day of overstay might not be an issue, but fines apply from the second day. Valid points about EU laws protecting passenger rights were discussed, noting that airlines are responsible for rebooking in such cases. The traveler later reported that they received accommodation and a flight, alongside a note for immigration.

Oh no! I really feel for you. Lufthansa cancelled our flight from UK to bbk 2 weeks ago, had to really fight to get put on another flight! We're missing work because of them not doing anything to help us. Hope you have better luck ☺️

Doesn't cover strike action as it's outside the control of the airline
Germán *******************
@Steve *******
that they need to prove it and they need to show that they did everything to try to not cancel that flight... They put that information there
Germán *******************
Remember that if you are at the airport inside (no tax area and that) you are not officially in Thailand then you are not overstaying, anyway Lufthansa must give you a solution under European laws (the company is EU and you are EU citizen, that means accomodation and everything should be paid for them)
Pete *******
If Lufthansa cancelled the flight due to strike action then no compensation is payable. They still have to make alternative travel arrangements for you though.

Everything sorted. I have been put up in a decent hotel for 2 nights food free. And I have a flight. Also a note for immigration.

glad you got sorted. Just a heads up about your note for immigration. I was in hospital in Bangkok last year and couldn't go to immigration to do my visa. The hospital issued me with a letter but when I went to immigration they still fined me and stamped an overstay in my passport. Hopefully won't happen to you but just be prepared

Nice ! Don t forget to ask your 600€
Germán *******************
@Pete ******
that is true but anyway they can't let you totally undefended in another country...some reclamation need to be done because we are not talking about Schengen and domestic flights... And need to be really proved that the strikes literally were the cause of the cancellation if not EU rights applies...
Richard ********
@Pete ******
you certainly don t know the Montreal convention

Strike or not it s not your problem
Richard ********
It s an internal strike in the company not an air traffic controllers or airport staff strike so no force majeur
Bobby ********
@Richard *******
Under EU law there's no compensation for delays/cancellations caused by strike action. All the airline is responsible for is to find an alternative.

@Bobby *******
No compensation only if they inform you 14 days before if less than 14 days they have to pay you 60O€ in this case
Pete *******
@Richard *******
They have to get you home but compensation for cancelled flight due to strike action is force majure.
Richard ********
@Pete ******
not sure

The first thing I would do is go to the airport and ask at the desk what they can do to get you home. I assume you are travelling alone? It can be surprising what they can do if you turn up in person!

Lufthansa are having a 1 day strike tomorrow

@Kevin *******
exactly! 1000 cancelled flights to/from Frankfurt and Munich! Strike in ground personell!
Edgar ************
Go to that airlines service counter, reputable airlines will get you on the next flight out (even if its a different airline)
Russell *******
From what I understand if it's a EU company or you purchased the ticket within the EU. The airline has to put you on another carrier, don't except if they tell you there don't have an agreement with the airline.
Della ********
It's down to them to find you another flight they can't just leave you there....
Richard ********
They have to find you another fly go to Lufthansa desk at the airport and have to pay you hotel and 600€

Lufthansa and Swiss are worst co than Aeroflot !!!

1 day overstay is no issue. From second day you pay 500,- THB fine for each day. Check for next flight first.

Go to immigration to get an extension so you don't have to pay 500 baht per day overstay fine

@Bobby *******
can I do that in the airport?
Dada ****
@Brian ****************
Honestly if you can find a flight within 2 days I wont bother losing my time at the immigration. Its a nightmare there. Better take the those last day enjoying Bangkok. But thats my opinion.🙏
Bobby ********
@Brian ****************
You can't. You have to go to immigration office
Brett **********
Lufthansa should be making an effort to get you into another flight at their expense. Their local number is +66 2 056 6868 but they do regular office hours so call now
Brett **********
check see what other airlines are in their network and see if they have any flights going today and let the represenatative know
Brett **********
they're star alliance, if that helps
Simone ********
@Brett *********
Thai air are star alliance (I think) i have just come back from Europe via Frankfurt on Lufthansa/Thai air flight. Perhaps try Thai air. Although there is a strike at Munich and Frankfurt airports tomorrow by groundstaff and all Lufthansa domestic flights have been cancelled. Sorry I can't be more helpful but TBH with my experience this summer with Lufthansa, I'll never fly with them again!!
