Hello. I hold a US passport with an ED visa in Thailand that expires on Jan 24th, 2020. I am currently visiting family in the US. Unfortunately I am now tending to a family emergency and I may be unable to return to Thailand before the expiration date of my ED visa. If I plan to return after the expiration date do I first need to cancel the visa at a Thai embassy?

Thank you kindly

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user holds an ED visa that expires while they are in the US. They are inquiring whether they need to cancel the visa at a Thai embassy before returning to Thailand after its expiration. Responses clarify that the visa will expire automatically and cancellation is not necessary, but if they return after the expiration, it is recommended to obtain a new visa and keep proof of their family emergency.

First of all we have to find out what you call an ED visa?

Did you visit a Thai Consulate and got a sticker in your passport, came to Thailand and are still on the initial 90 days of that entry, like the Admitted until 24 Jan 2020 in this example?

Or did you already with documents from the school visit your local Immigration Office and applied and got a big stamp with in the second line the text: Extension of Stay permitted up to 24 Jan 2020?

Understood fully. Thank you :)

You cancel the Extension of Stay at the Immigration Office who stamped it inside your passport.

a Visa has a valid until date and the day after it becomes a useless memory in your passport

No problem, If you plan to come back after 24th Jan you have to cancel, if it is not sure, it will be not a big problem.

Take some proof of the family emergency as reason on your quick departure, get a new visa before you come back, visit the Immigration and you can still cancel this Extension of Stay.

Hello Robert. I have the extension of stay granted till Jan 24th. My apologies on not referring to it properly. All of my extensions have been used up at this point.

Are you married to a Thai?

And if age 50+ ... Its time to obtain the correct visa for retirement in Thailand.

As you had asked about retirement extensions of stay before...

If married to a Thai or have Thai child you support ....go to Savannakhet and get one year Non O visa...no proof of banked money needed in Thailand.

You cannot cancel it at a Thai Embassy/Consulate in the US.

Did you get a reentry permit before you left to go to the US?

What was the permission to stay date on your second/recently issued Ed Visa?

And as you have been living in Thailand be prepared to answer questions upon your arrival back into Thailand if you seek to enter with or without a visa.

The visa will simply expire. No action on your part is required.
