Can I reenter Thailand on a visa exemption if my ED visa expires while I'm abroad?

Can’t fly back to cancel my ED visa on time. Can I fly back on exemption after expiration?

In my home country (Philippines) right now applying for a Schengen visa. Current visa expires Jan 14 but it might take a while for me to get my passport back.

My cats and my stuff are still in Bangkok and I have plans to get another long-term visa later this year.

What’s the best recourse here? Think I shouldn’t have a problem reentering through exemption for now but I could be wrong. TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about their ED visa expiring while they are in the Philippines and whether they can return to Thailand on a visa exemption, given their plan to apply for a long-term visa later. Answers suggest that reentering Thailand on a visa exemption should be possible since the user is from an ASEAN country, but caution that they may face a fine if they don’t cancel their ED visa before applying for another visa.

It depends on what other stamps are in your passport before your ED visa, and during your ED visa.

My ED visa was for a year. I have two covid extension stamps and I’ve visited Vietnam and the Philippines another time during my visa period. That’s why I’m worried.

with your ED visa did you do extensions with immigration every 90 days with the paperwork your school gave you? If not you could have problems, as immigration will view you as someone trying to stay long term without the correct visa extension

Yeah I did the extensions properly.

Entering on visa Exempt is fine when you return.

But if you try to get another long term visa or extension and you haven't cancelled your ED extension, you'll be fined 20,000 baht and you have to take care of that before you can get a new long term visa/extension.

Brandon Thurkettle really fined 20,000 baht? But you can cancel it anytime? Even after it expired, with no penalty?
Brandon ************
@Callum ********
no, the 20,000₿ fine is for not cancelling it because you signed a paper that said you would cancel it when you stopped studying.

Brandon Thurkettle Damn. I left the country without cancelling mine. Planning to go back soon visa exempt. Will I only get the fine if I try to get a new long term visa? Is there any point cancelling it when I go back or am I already screwed?

it should only become an issue if you try to get a long term visa or long term extension. Just tourism stuff probably will be fine.

Is there a chance I get denied entry if I return shortly after expiration? Like 2 days after.

@Mela ********
I'm not sure I understand the question. If the visa is expired or already used, it's no longer relevant to anything.

I was thinking about people who border bounce and go around visa rules. Will Thai immigration think I’m abusing the system if I try to reenter shortly after my visa expires?

your visa doesn't matter. Your entry is what matters. If you've done multiple exit and re-enter or have covid extension stamps in your passport you may run into issues.

- does any of that cancellation apply to a retirement extension?
