We’ve run into a bit of logistical situation regarding our 4yo passport- his passport just passed the 6 month validity mark (meaning still valid, but only 5.5 months left) and we were planning on leaving this week, however we were just notified that although the country we are going to only requires 3 months of validity, the airline requires 6 months and can refuse boarding. So we are left with 2 options- apply for emergency passport or apply for a new passport but my son will then be overstaying his time in Thailand. My husband still has 3 weeks left on his 30 day extension, and myself and the youngest could technically do a visa run, so it would only be the 4year old that is “overstaying”. The processing time at the US embassy is roughly 3 weeks so we can assume he’ll be around 3 weeks overstaying, give or take a week or so. Has anyone had experience with this? Will we be charged the 500baht/day for his overstaying or is that only charged to adults?
Thank you for the help!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A parent is facing a situation where their 4-year-old child’s passport is just under six months valid, leading to potential overstaying while they secure a new passport to meet airline requirements. They seek advice on whether the child will incur overstay penalties and if there are expedited solutions at the embassy. Comments suggest that emergency passports are usually for returning home, that the child will receive an overstay stamp but likely face no penalties, and emphasize the importance of considering passport validity when planning travel.
Thank you so much for this helpful comment!!! It’s like all travel always go to plan 100% of the time and I expected to be in this situation and just didn’t plan accordingly 😃😃
Bob D'Andrea Thank you for clarifying. I suspected that it depends on your embassy. I've gotten an emergency passport to leave my home country as well as one for my daughter to leave Korea (when not traveling to my home country). The only requirement from my embassy (USA) was that I have a plane ticket departing in 3 days. But maybe rules are different in Thailand???
Can you get an Extension for your toddler (age 4 years old) in his current, 'old' U.S. Passport Book right Before applying for his New/Renewal U.S. Passport Book???
Honestly, no need to get any Extension and just have your toddler overstay
