What should I do if my bank balance drops below 500,000 baht while on a DTV in Thailand?

I have my DTV, but have some unexpected expenses and I will drop below the 500,000 baht limit. How will it work for trips in and out? Will I run into issues, do they check the current balance? Is there anything I can do?

Thanks!

Ps - my parents can sponsor me, but I’d like to avoid it if I can.

TLDR : Answer Summary
If your bank balance drops below the 500,000 baht limit while holding a DTV visa, you may not encounter immediate issues when traveling in and out of Thailand, as immigration usually does not check your bank balance upon re-entry. However, when applying for extensions, especially moving from a 180 to a 360-day visa, they might request to see your funds again. It’s advisable to plan ahead, and if necessary, you could obtain sponsorship letters from family or temporarily adjust your finances to meet the requirements.

I was asked to show my 500k was there and accessible on my first arrival on DTV in July at Chiang Mai. I was approached for interview after submitting my digital arrival card.

Don’t listen to anyone here, I was checked.

approached for interview after submitting digital arrival card? lol 🤣🤣 you fill out the TDAC 1-3 days prior to arrival and it will be in the system. there is no filling out or submitting inside the airport. so thats a little wild what you state 🤣

You can fill out your TDAC at the airport on arrival. I think you’re misinformed.

as a last opportunity but not as a stabdard process. the official probably thaught „hey this guy cannot even do a single super easy official task, let us check if he is even able to stay here legaly“ ;)

The 500,000 baht is mainly checked at the application stage and again if you’re doing an extension inside Thailand. Immigration doesn’t usually re-check your account every time you exit and re-enter, so short trips in and out aren’t normally a problem as long as you already hold the visa.

Where it can matter is if you go to extend from 180 → 360 days. At that point, they can ask to see your funds again, so you’ll want to plan ahead. Some people top up with family sponsorship letters (your parents could help if needed), others move savings around temporarily just to show the balance.

This exact scenario was one of the little details I was confused about until I found a guide that explained it step by step. I searched for Thailand DTV Visa Guide on Amazon. The mini book goes into these financial requirements in depth and shows practical ways to stay compliant without losing sleep

He whole point is to use in emergency. You will probably never be asked for it if you dont extend in country at immigration. Dont worry
Dee ******
You are only requested to show the bank statement when you apply, once approved they don’t need to see

until you try to do an in country extension….

oh I’ve never needed to this

I have been in and out multiple times. Never been asked to show 500k and I don't expect to be asked.

At present you are not asked to show your bank balance on arrival. If you extend at immigration you need to have the 500k.

ahhh this is helpful. So you need to show the balance every time an extension is processed? But not after a year when doing a border bounce? Just making sure I understand this correctly.
Andi ***********
@Colleen ******
Yes, you need to show it when you extend. Doing a border hop or regular reentry there is no current requirement to do so. You must first border bounce at the 6mth mark not a year though. You can only stay a year without leaving if you extend at an IO.
Colleen *******
@Andi **********
Ok thank you. So when you get the visa, I thought you could renew in country at the 6 month mark at an Immigration Office and then at the 12 month mark you have to do a border bounce. Is not not true?
Andi ***********
@Colleen ******
Yeah, You can renew in country at 6mths if you want then have to do border hop, correct.

thank you for explaining that. Sorry for all the questions but it's good to fully understand these things before applying. Then I know what we're getting into. We're going to do our whole family so it's a fair investment and we're just looking at all the options. I appreciate you taking time to explain it thoroughly. :-)

@Colleen ******
no problem, also when you extend at an IO, you can be given an "extension under consideration slip". So you may have to wait and some on return have been told they need to border hop due to some minor discrepancy in paperwork. There are probably countries nearby you want to visit anyway. So visit them and get a new 6mth stamp on return

@Andi **********
thank you. I've had that "under consideration" before. It was fine. But yep. We could border bounce every 6 months. The kids have been to Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam when we lived there last time. But now they want to do Japan, and South Korea. Could be a good reason to go.

Appreciate the heads up 🙏😊.

@Colleen ******
Def come to Japan, it is where i live or half live now with my DTV. Amazing country. S Korea is great, love the food there.

ah how wonderful 🎉. Japan is awesome. We've been to Tokyo before and Kagura to go skiing but the kids haven't been so it would really be for them to see it. Our daughter loves the idea. She's been learning Japanese online over the past year so it will be nice to put it into practice. Be great to see South Korea too ❤️. Have you been living there long?
Andi ***********
@Colleen ******
It will be a great chance for your daughter to put her Japanese into practice. I've been a Tokyoite for 20 years but gradually moving to LOS, the remote work/multi entry option of the DTV is great, so have best of both worlds, at the moment.

@Colleen ******
you can renew in country but that is when Immigration Officers can ask you to show the 500k! Hence why people do a border bounce or have a local holiday.
Colleen *******
Anonymous participant 154 Ah I see. Ok that makes sense. So theoretically people can just keep leaving the country every six months and continually renew their visa without having to show the cash. Is that what you mean?
Andi ***********
@Colleen ******
That's right, it is much easier to border hop without showing cash, filling out forms. When I got my DTV, the Thai officer told me to just border hop, it is so much easier and they were right.
