Hi guys,

Can anyone give me some advice to help me with one little worry I have that could happen in the future, I have sadly recently lost my thai partner, I’m trying now to get myself together and travel freely around Thailand to help my grieving with the car she left me, I’m confident on the thai roads surprisingly but have one little worry and that is breaking down, firstly you loose the air-con that is hard enough on it’s own to accept under a stressful situation with no shade in site, then who do I call? had tire burst before and a local stopped told me go back in the car and he put the spare on and would not take any money same happened at a hotel we had a flat in the morning, fantastic people but breaking down is a little different, does Thailand have countrywide organised breakdown recovery hot lines like the UKs AA or RAC or something? I have been Googling but was wondering if anyone had first hand experience in this situation, thank you Mike

TLDR : Answer Summary
Mike expresses concerns about breaking down while driving in Thailand, especially after losing his partner. Community members provide condolences and practical advice, including suggestions for obtaining roadside assistance through Shell or auto insurance companies, contacting the highway police (1193), or seeking help from local mechanics and tourists police. Various insurance options, like Roojai, which covers breakdowns, are recommended, alongside tips for keeping essential emergency contacts handy.

And.. If you feel like you are cracking or need a quiet moment, pull over at an amazon and just sit and reflect, grab a coffee and then carry on when you are ready. Far better to get somewhere late and safe. It's a hell of time and memories hit at the most unpredictable moments. Drive safe, she'll be watching you and quietly telling you the same thing 🥰

First get the car serviced, check fan belt radiator hoses, You can buy aerosol can of puncture repair to carry with you to mend punctured tires. Carry extra water at all times. You should update the blue book as Tom suggests.Keep a copy of government and private insurance policies in the glove box if you travel lobg distances refill petrol when half full.Good luck & safe travels

Don’t you have an emergency number with your insurance? Some insurances help all over the country.

Roojai insurance do a breakdown service for cars under I think 15vyears old. It's not quite AA or RAC standards it's more a Green Flagging!!! But better than nothing.

Sorry for your loss Michael. But happy that you have taken to touring to help your grieving.

Aircon is easy to fix if it's just a re-gas.

"PTT Fit" have a Aircon clean and regas service. Many branches over Thailand.

Tyres become brittle with age due to UV.

Order replacement tyres for you car; "Deestone" is a good budget brand made here in Thailand. (Tyres have an approximate life of 5 years).

Have all the fluids changed on the car. Oil, brake fluid, Gearbox, radiator, power steering etc to give you the best chance of a preventable breakdown. Check whether your engine has cam-belt it chain. Easily researchable on the internet.

Replace cam-belt and water pump if old.

Replace the ancillary drive belts also.

Have alternator tested for output and change battery as they get killed in the humidity here.

I've always "first paraded" my vehicles. The only issue I've ever had since 1988 was an expansion tank coolant hose spring a pin- hole leak whilst touring Europe. I recall it cost me less than £5.00 to fix at a French auto shop!

Stay safe on the roads.

we have had several issues on the roads over the last 10 years and never had a stressful moment and most do not want payment .

I use Roojai they cover breakdown, I always carry water in the car just incase, I service it myself so I really know it will never fail, I also have an ELM327 for code reading on the spot came in handy once when the car went into limp home mode, still drove but lacked power until I fixed

While we don’t have the convenience of AAA or its equivalent here, I found that when we had car trouble recently a host of local folks offered advice and assistance, including the lovely staff of the

I would contact the tourist police, OR a motorcycle taxi driver if you break down. They would be able to help you.

The tourist police is everywhere in Thailand, and there's a tourist police station in every single province.

Firstly sorry for your loss. I’m a bit like you my partner had the answers and so would you in your own country so your not alone, similar tire thing coming back north from Bk great people. I don’t know your previous situation regarding who owns car etc but make sure your names on the book and you have licence etc etc then go round your expat friends before you go on journey and put as many salient numbers in a small book and keep in car such as embassy numbers, friends, 24hr roadside assistance in Thailand etc, keep in car so you feel comfortable, and practice changing a tire. Sorry if I sound condescending but only trying to help. Good luck in your journey 🙏🙏

Not condescending that’s generally helpful information thank you, maybe a little judgmental though on the regards to my tire changing skills lol, no 🙂 thank you I’m asking for help and you are kind enough to reply, a few years ago I could change a tire or probably rebuild a whole car maybe:/ but the years have not treated my bones too well health wise,

in this country the thai people see my walking stick and me stumbling around at the boot and they just help me and not let me change the tire, breaking down is my issue, money normally gets me out of trouble here but also could possibly get me if I’m unlucky into trouble depending where I breakdown and who I could meet that’s the worry however unlikely,

the ownership of the car is sorted licences car and motorcycle both I have,

in 7 years driving here I haven’t had any real bad problems with breaking down and travel but now I feel a little more vulnerable when dealing with strangers without my partner, I don’t want this to stop me travelling though, thank you

This is a worlwide operating insurance company.

Roojai car insurance can add breakdown cover to your policy as long as it's not over 12 years old (I think it's 12). They have a mobile app. So if you call for assistance, they know exactly where you are (even if you don't).there is also a nationwide breakdown company here but can't remember the name. (Green flag???). Finally the vehicle manufacturers handbook usually has a nationwide list of dealers at the back, you could call the nearest dealership.

Sorry for your loss. If you get the Shell gas station member card (free at any Shell gas station) you can register for free nationwide roadside assistance. Some auto insurance policies also offer a roadside assistance option for a small extra fee.
