ORIGINAL POSTER
I have been offered the use of GF's brother in laws spare car next time I'm in the country, not sure if I should take them up on the offer because of the insurance implications, I'm told that the car is insured but what happens if I have an accident (I'm aware that it will be my fault) ? So any advice would be appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the concerns of accepting an offer to use a car in Thailand due to potential insurance liabilities and accident risks. Commenters emphasize the importance of checking the car's insurance type, obtaining the necessary driving licenses, and being cautious about driving in Thailand, particularly for those unfamiliar with local driving conditions. Many recommend alternatives like using ride apps or taxis for safety. Several commenters express strong hesitation or advise against driving altogether, citing high accident rates and the complexities of driving in Thai traffic.

You are aware of nothing, why should be your fault?

If you are to blame and kill someone while driving, you will most likely be paying for their funeral too.

I agree with Si Simon. There are many motorcycles without proper lighs front and back everywhere!

I have the same offer from family.

If anything and I mean anything happens to the car it will be your fault.

Breaks, tyres, timing belt, the list goes on.

I never taken them up on the kind offer.

Make sure it’s first class coverage. I find the insurance coverage is excellent. The other day a motorbike parked an inch from my back left corner while I was in the 7/11 I didn’t notice how close he had (stupidly) parked. But of course technically it was my fault of course. A little crowd formed and fortunately there was a helpful young woman who spoke perfect English. He wanted me to go to the police station. I very politely but very firmly said no way. We call my insurance man who will be here in 30 minutes. He called the cops who showed up 5 minutes later. Two very nice policemen. I showed the police my insurance. The older cop looked at the document with a look of “you’re the first person I’ve seen all week with decent insurance” and gave me smiles and a thumbs up. And he started walking away as he had zero interest. I walked up to him and thanked him and told him I had offered the guy 2000b to save the insurance hassle. He basically told the guy to take my money and be grateful for 2000b for nothing. The point is you need to be polite and sympathetic but firm and fair. Some Falang just can’t do that. That’s the truth. Thai people are very reasonable when you are nice to them. The fellow was all hugs and handshakes before we all left. For something major you need to let the insurance guy deal with it. There is risk when you drive a car. Obviously. You could rent a Mercedes and uniformed chauffeur instead. And still have to pay 2000b.

Driving in Thailand is easy, much the same as the UK, so you will be fine.

There are a few things to watch out for, like giving way (even on roundabouts, when you are already on the roundabout) to cars to the right and roadwork signs in bright orange.

Cars often hogg the r/h lane, so undertaking is the norm here.

Expect lorries to pull out on you at any time and get used to motorbikes being all around you, but they get out of the way.

I've driven 50,000 km in the past 3 years here, with no accidents.

Don’t.

Bradley *********
Why on earth would you say you’re aware it will be your fault?
Kim *********
@Bradley ********
why? because the foreigner usually gets the blame no matter what happened. A well known quote from the police : if you hadn't been there the accident would not have happened. And it is not a joke. Front and back camera is necessary and don't give the recording to the police but to the insurance company.

you are an Rassist, stupid and you don't know anything about Thailand. I had 4 accidents and my son 2 and not on one we been guilty of it. You spread stupid lies about thailand

ha ha you talk BS and are totally wrong
Bradley *********
@Kim ********
in the last 25 years I’ve been in three accidents and the Thai police have deemed the Thai drivers at fault in everyone of them. That’s not a well-known quote, it’s urban legend.

My advice is not to drive if you have never driven on the left side of the road. Motorcycles 🏍 are everywhere and drive in-between cars. When I am in Chiang Mai my Thai finance drives me everywhere.

You’ll need an IDP (1968 version) and a photo driving licence from your own country. Also check the car is fully insured.
Heng ******
Depending on what class grade is the insurance . If it's Class A insurance , it covers anyone with a thailand valid driving licence.
Neil ******
@Heng *****
that’s not true. Some first class insurance policies are named driver only.
Heng ******
@Neil *****
oh? For my insurance it covers all licensed driver in all situation
Neil ******
@Heng *****
ok, but your insurance isn’t everyone’s. Some of the policies do and some don’t. I pay extra for the coverage but if I didn’t pay extra, only I would be covered.
