DTV Update Soft Power

Third update sorry. My Soft Power DTV was refused today. I'm in Jakarta and have been here since the 30th April. I guess any pointers of next steps might be good. I do not want to just re-apply under the same conditions either. I am not sure as to the reason but I did have a gym registration, training plan booked under a reputable gym, personal muay thai history and comfortably met the financial requirement in a UK bank. I am worried about spending months in Jakarta though. Any constructive advice welcome. Thanks so much.
Answer summary
The user expresses concern after their Soft Power DTV visa was rejected while in Jakarta. They are looking for advice on how to proceed, considering the reasons for the rejection and the conditions under which they had applied, such as having a gym registration and meeting financial requirements. Community members suggest applying from their home country, providing clearer evidence of financial support, and distancing from connotations of living in Thailand on a tourist visa. Other recommendations include exploring alternative options and improving application clarity in future submissions.

It has been our experience in several cases of rejection recently Bashir. We have customers being approved with identical documents the only difference between the ones rejected and the ones approved that we found was exactly this. Indication that they had been living or plan to live in Thailand. If you know something I don’t please DM me but that is the only difference we could find between them.

pretty sure multiple entry tourist visa is still available. If you get a triple entry tourist visa you get stamped two months when you enter and can extend at immigration for 1 month for a fee. Then you do a visa run, leave and re-enter the country which activates the second part and you get two more months and repeat the process all over again.

The biggest thing that we have been seeing is that people give indication that they are planning to or are already living in Thailand. Remember, this is a tourist visa and the more Thai bank accounts and Thai addresses you list the more it looks like you are using this visa as a long term residence visa instead of having the intention of coming to Thailand regularly as a visitor to learn Muay Thai.
Bashir *******
Bashir *******
@Bryan *******
I am not sure this is always the case. I feel they want people to get off the extensions and get a visa. I dont think thai addresses are an issue, perhaps a bank account with suspicious transactions indicating employment, but I dokt think a bank account alone is a red flag

It is helpful to show ties to your home country. Employment, business ownership, property ownership, family obligations or any other ongoing commitment outside of Thailand.

Yes, you’re right that long stay can raise a red flag that the DTV is not the right visa for you.

You must offer them sufficient evidence that the DTV visa will be used for its intended purposes. You have applied at a great gym with a lot of experience in DTV visas. Definitely follow whatever advice they offer. Best of luck!

Yeah they'll take your money.

I got mine but it was a legit digital nomad visa.

People.applying for soft visas are like 50+ trying to do muthai... Probably look at the age. Instant rejection
Kerry *******
Kerry *******
OP
@Christopher *****
I don't think 50+ is automatically too old to do muay thai. A good friend of mine got theirs approved over 50+. And they really do train it serious. I don't think it's a fighting visa, I'm wondering probably the opposite given my result.

I was applying for nomad but my income is often so low and generally inconsistent. I read mixed stuff on a minimum income floor for it, I was already training for a long time so i did that as it suited my training plans more aligned.
David *******

You still haven’t said how you will support yourself. I think your previous ED visa and now this application shows a desire to live in Thailand
Kerry *******
Kerry *******
OP
@David ******
I'm very uncertain as to what support means in terms of finances.

My wrong assumption was that that was proven in the financial buffer of 500k bht of soft power category. That a regular income is not necessary. I obviously am mistaken

And yes its really possible immigration agree with your assessment so it's why im thinking not to re apply
Anonymous ******************
Anonymous ******************
@Kerry ******
Not the 500K requirement. That's something different. Support means how you earn income to pay for your living expenses for 5 years. And not just for the duration of the course.

Attach the cover letter atop your financials PDF and upload as a single document
Kerry *******
Kerry *******
OP
@Wannikea ********
That's interesting. So there does seem to be a hidden minimum floor.

My plan was always assuming since I get contracts in England, some of these larger ones need in-person contact. Should my money get low I go back to England to get more in person contracts - These big projects tend to be comission type basis, and people like to talk in person. whereas the remote income is shop wholesaling. It's POD and doesn't take any live work, but the money is inconsistent and low. It's why I didn't go for digital nomad.

But I was not given a chance in the initial application to provide a cover letter, perhaps this was something expected later and I failed on.
Wannikea *********
Wannikea *********
@Kerry ******
typically some embassies ask to see 3-6 months of bank statements to see your cash flow. You should consider the 500K an emergency buffer, and prepare to explain how you will fund your life over the next few years. Many successful applicants have included the brief cover letter outlining their reasons and interests for being in Thailand and a general overview of how they will exist and support themselves.
Kerry *******
Kerry *******
OP
Anonymous participant 447 Fair if so but that's not clearly stated in the requirements either. Especially not soft power. Nor is it explained how they expect to see evidence presented, how much they expect to see incoming. Request for evidence only comes after you pay the fee and vague at that.

I'm going to take a wild guess here but did they ask how you'd support yourself while in Thailand? My husband applied under medical category and although it wasn't a requirement, he included proof of rental income as evidence in how he'll be able to sustain himself while in Thailand. Maybe this is something you're missing from your application.
Kerry *******
Kerry *******
OP
@Carrie ***
I did include a breakdown and somewhere this caused scrutiny. But people I know had no active income (And should not compare) but they got approved. So yea that stumped me too. Also I was told theres no minimum income threshold on either visa but I don't know whats true anymore

@Kerry ******
how do you then survive without an income? massive savings? because the 500k that you need to show are NOT for living expenses during your dtv time.

@Srey ******
yes, agree that is reasonable and I'm making plans to improve it. That is if it was the issue. And particular to London Embassy's discretion on how or what is allowed as a means of remote work
Srey *******
Srey *******
@Kerry ******
you obviously haven't met a Thai brick wall

The simple answer here is you need to be able to show you have a consistent, reliable source of income that could realistically support your life in Thailand in the coming years
Kerry *******
Kerry *******
OP
@Srey ******
Well I've broken brick walls and heads before 😁

I'm going to pursue this one since I practice muay thai but my confusion was on why i was rejected. Im really looking for advice in how i would better qualify for this visa so i can work to be the best candidate to be accepted, as I have belief its the best fit for me and I am a good candidate.

I have no idea why I was rejected, so respectfully as neither of us are officers, this is probably not constructive to just discuss the ins and outs of it and to convince me of alternatives.
Srey *******
Srey *******
@Kerry ******
Thailand doesn't care about your specific plans. You're applying for a visa that gives you the ability to live in Thailand for extended periods of time for the next 5 years. They need to see that you can support yourself reliably if you choose to do so under the visa you've applied for

You would be better off looking at alternative visas. Otherwise I'm afraid you'll keep beating your head against a brick wall
Kerry *******
Kerry *******
OP
@Srey ******
I don't believe i misunderstand this.

I'm using these periods to get uninterrupted training sets over 5 years. Other visas don't provide this. Then I intend to leave for the UK over (my) high season periods. Usually its August and December. Of course people can use the DTV differently. It's my understanding that while you *can do what you're saying, there is a mandatory exit once a year as well. Although this can technically be one night I suppose I dont think immigration exactly intended that either back to back. It's multi entry and you are expected to leave from time to time as stipulated by the mandatory reset
Srey *******
Srey *******
@Kerry ******
I think you fundamentally misunderstand what the DTV is and what the Thais are concerned about

The validity period for the DTV is 5 years. During that time, each entry to the country gives you 180 days. Technically you can extend each entry once for another 180 days. Officially there's no limit to the number of times you can enter

So actually in principle you could use this to live in Thailand continuously for 5 years with the caveat that your entry is always at the discretion of the IO no matter what visa you hold
Kerry *******
Kerry *******
OP
@Srey ******
But the dtv isn't meant to be a continuous 5 year living visa. You HAVE to leave the country every year at minimum. And if you reset inside the country they continue to check your account balance. I understand a need for stability but the way it has been presented isnt clear. If I clearly know the parameters I can work to meet them
Srey *******
Srey *******
@Andi **********
and 500,000 thb is nowhere near enough for 5 years even if you're frugal

So people thinking they can have limited income and less than even 1 million thb will continue to be frustrated
Andi ***********
Andi ***********
@Srey ******
Low income by itself is not enough, yes. You need to evidence sufficient savings to offset that concern.
Srey *******
Srey *******
@Andi **********
low income is quite obviously not fine these days

It's obvious the Thais want to make sure that DTV applicants have a reliable way to support themselves
Srey *******
Srey *******

complex doesn't work to your advantage

DTV is a 5 year visa. They want to see clearly and easily that you have enough income to support yourself reliably

I'm veryyy confused about supporting yourself element yeah. Its really hard to fix if you don't know why they didnt trust it. I heard UK is pretty difficult too

@Kerry ******
Sorry to hear of your rejection. Did they focus on your business during the interview? When reapplying definitely submit a 9mths plus course. Seems they may be confused with your business structure. Take some time to de-stress and it is worth reapplying. Many approve the 2nd time around. If you are going back to the UK, worth applying there.

@Dany *******
Yea don't know what the discrepancy is.

My UK business (I own a print company selling to UK shops) makes a modest income. I live frugally. The breakdown of that was complex and maybe not clear because of many tiny income streams and likely also caused scrutiny.
